Had to connect to my lap top in order to get onto skype so I missed getting to add in a comment about the prison system.
Jails should only house criminals who are unable to be rehabilitated into society. Every other criminal should be given counseling to figure out the root of their criminal behavior, treat their behavior and then rehabilitate them into society.
Yes some people need to be locked up for ever but most of the criminals in the prisons these days are in there for behavior that can be treated. Jails just make misdemeanor criminals more angry, give them more knowledge and insight into crime and usually end up in a gang.
You are striped naked and striped of any dignity, humiliated repeatedly in prison, no wonder these misdemeanor criminals end up committing bigger crimes.

My opinion is that many "crimes" are just lifestyle choices and that society is large enough to have the various communities to accommodate us all. I don't care if thieves steal from other thieves who have chosen and accepted that way of life.

I don't care, in fact would like to see it, if a community of drunk drivers crashed into each other. I'm sure I would choose a community that didn't have a bar on every street corner and nightlife revolved around things other than consuming America's favorite recreational drug - but that's just me. I certainly don't want to deprive others of living their lives as they choose nor do I feel I must be obligated to accept their standards, unless it was my choice to live among them.

What crimes must be punished? And what other behaviors have enough practitioners that they cannot have their own community with those standards? Damn few IMHO. Prisons are a scam and people do not need to conform to one world standard. But by the same token it must be incumbant upon society to offer its people the means necessary to find their place and choose their manner of living. We need not all be the same and there is no reason to hate someone that is different.

Justice would become a matter of finding a place for everything, and administration of justice would be about putting it into its place.

I thank the ATS Live crew for allowing me the opportunity to call into the show and expressing my opinion on this topic. I just wish I hadn't been so tongue-tied I couldn't think to say what all was on my mind. I enjoyed calling-in and will do so again on some other occasion.
