Websites Will Be Forced To Identify Trolls

news.sky.com

Websites will be legally obliged to provide victims with the identity of people who post abusive and defamatory online messages about them under plans by the Government.

Glen Oglaza said the reforms have widespread support across the parties, so the Bill should make its progress through Parliament pretty quickly.

The power to ask for anonymous identities to be revealed are intended to give individuals an avenue of redress should they be subject to defamatory comments online.

Firstly, i don't see how this is going to work considering the Internet is an International community, and this is only being passed through UK laws.

Secondly, if it does get through, hopefully it won't strip away further freedom and anonymity from the internet realm.

Sucks to be you Britain.

It may suck to be Britain now, but what starts there will spread to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and eventually here to the US.

Canada and Australia are already feeling some things. Australia has been feeling a lot of things since the 1990's/early 2000's...such as banned gun laws and indefinite detention...

I wonder if websites will be forced to identify all of the porn surfing government employees (who probably double as trolls).

In Canada the hate (speach) laws that protect only the zionists have been stymied by the courts and public exposure
I'm sure they will replace it with something else to stop free thought and speach

I'm sure the definition of troll will go the same way as the definition of terrorist did..
it will be new speaked to describe the honest patriotic peeps and make them the targets

So, when I say online that Tony Blair is a war criminal, money grubbing zionist apologist then I could find myself being areested for hurting his feelings?

In some cases, I can see where current libel legislation would already cover what is said on the internet, and rightly so. However, with this new proposal, who gets to determine what is acceptable? Furthermore, will we see people arrested for simply having an opinion that someone high and mighty takes offence to, even if it is true?

I also wonder if we'd see the government bending to kiss butt by allowing extradition of UK citizens to foreign states if they say something about a foreign national? A very slippery slope they are engaging on, but not unexpected.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a good idea?
I hate trolls who hide behind a keyboard being such cowards at least when this goes through if someone is abusing me online I will be able to find out who they are and go and duff em up

Stupid idea.

But there is a simple solution people: act right. Is it really that hard to act right, to not victimize other people with your behavior? Or do we want to give people the right to be obnoxious to the point of slander and libel?

So many people get called trolls online. In fact you can troll people by calling them a troll. What a load of crazy this is going to turn in to....

I feel like the internet is getting trolled right now.

Where's that serious business meme from '97?

So what... identity theft is a big problem.

Wifi drive by hacking is a big problem.

PROVE IT WAS ME, YOU DAMN FILTHY PIGS!!!!!11

Nah, just trollin'

but not really.. I am serial.

So, if the only method of getting onto an ISP is via some form of ID, then we may have bigger problems to solve. People WILL still get online without being known. Has not stopped people using nom de plumes everywhere. And that's in real life.

It's all huff and baloney.

I've been a few people since I first got onto the interwebs. And for good reason. I used to be very vocal and political on alternate substance forums many years ago, and all I do now is check my few forums, play a game or upload twaddle to youtube.

Still my name is no where on the internet. *I* am however.

Easy, just leave your wifi open. keep an eye on it, and then when the party van rocks up, plead ignorance. "I dunno how to set up wifi I just plugged it in."

As for the actual idea, well it's a little bit more than trolling, when you're going to someone's house and leaving flowers (Say hi to Boxxy everyone) so.. sticks and stones may break my bones, but the pigs will get you nyah nyah!

I don't buy it, it won't happen. It's huff and puff. And if it does somehow pass, unless there is a crime involved then good luck wasting the courts time, coppers.

meh

any half decent troll will be behind a foreign proxy or 2 which will make it pretty much useless, it'll catch a few of the more stupid ones to make a few examples of but general effect will be that people will still troll and the police and courts will have to deal with all sorts of people who think they've been trolled when infact they just perhaps need to think before they post in the first place as i'm sure alot of the hate trolls will get bored when theres nothing to spew hatred at

The thing is, trolling is as often just pulling people's leg. An example of this would be trolling a mormon chat, or yahoo answers, with stupid questions or improbable answers (mostly just for kicks).

Then you have the trolls who will directly insult people in conversations (this is slander and is already illegal via current laws).

Then you have people who just obstruct conversations that they don't want to happen. THis happens in every single thread here on ATS about politics, abortion, 9-11, ad nauseum.

So which trolls will they go after? The first are just out for laughs, and usually make others laugh along the way. The second is already illegal. The third, while not illegal, is obnoxious and should be dealt with via the sites TandC

Or just make everyone use their real name etc I bet all the 12 year old trolls would stop being trolls if people could find em.
Face to face most trolls would crap themselves if they knew their victim knew who they were.

Oh and I don't think it's just normal trolls I think it's the people who target people constantly a bit like a cyber stalker not like you Danbones your a little troll
.

(Sorry Danbones Iam trolling again
luv you really
