Clinton Labor Sec. Tells Grads: 'You're Screwed'

Robert Reich always likes to "tell it like it is" !!

He had a compelling urge to tell graduates that they may have some problems after finishing college.

Partial Quote from his speech addressed to "Members of the Class of 2012":

As a former secretary of labor and current professor, I feel I owe it to you to tell you the truth about the pieces of parchment you're picking up today.

You're screwed.

Well, not exactly. But you won't have it easy.

First, you're going to have a hell of a hard time finding a job. The job market you're heading into is still bad. Fewer than half of the graduates from last year's class have as yet found full-time jobs. Most are still looking.

That's been the pattern over the last three graduating classes: It's been taking graduates more than a year to land the first job. And those who still haven't found a job will be competing with you, making your job search even harder.

He seems to emphasize the fact that many graduates and Parents are strung out on long term loans now.

Reich also highlighted the nation's massive student loan debt:

For many of you, your immediate problem is that pile of debt on your shoulders. In a few moments, when you march out of here, those of you who have taken out college loans will owe more than $25,000 on average. Last year, 10 percent of college grads with loans owed more than $54,000. Your parents have also taken out loans to help you. Loans to parents for the college educations of their children have soared 75 percent since the academic year 2005-06.

Outstanding student debt now totals over $1 trillion. That's more than the nation's total credit card debt.

In 2008, Barack Obama carried 18-29 year-olds by more than 2-1 over John McCain.

Is it "Loan Indoctrination" ??

They are doomed. It is time to repudiate all debt public and private. End the fed and tell all bankers to GET BENT. It is there turn after all, they have been bending the rest of us over for decades if not centuries.

That's just here. At a minimum, you would have to go back to the battle of Waterloo. Or to Adam Weisthaup(sp?) in the 1770s.

This situation is very dismal, knowing a handful of friends who have jobs and still struggle to pay off there loans, i cant imagine having no prospects and being underwater that deep...it literally gives me some anxiety and im debt free, cater privately and rent a house....in florida....at minimal cost. I know the trolls will be out to say that all of these kids and there families new what they were getting into but thats just not the case.....we have literally been brainwashed from all directions to accept this paradigm.....then on top of it all the crusty old cunks steering the ship decide to sink it. What the ## happened to apprenticeships?! In the world of chefs they are called stage' or commis, you train with a badass talented hardworking chef that YOU respect, work your butt off basically for FREE to gain KNOWLEDGE and on the fly practice of one or more techniques(saute', grill, plate, etc). We need to create community sponsored apprenticeship programs in all areas of education, and maybe reallocate some godamn military spending to states so they can offer grants.

At least the Professor was honest. Truth...is often painful, but unavoidable.

Unfortunately, he did not mention to the grads WHY, the reason for the rut we are in.

Fact is, somebody had to do the screwing. Say thanks to the rich elites, protected by the GOP, to cut taxes for them, help them go overseas to get wealthy by screwing the world with cheap wages and cheap products sold high through the misnamed 'globalisation' & 'free trade', then hoarding that wealth, or to gamble on the casino stock exchange, or drive up property prices till the young cannot afford a home without getting into debt for generations, as a means so that the elites can remain rich, indolent and lazy, without getting the stress to create services or manufacturing jobs.

But this is not the end for the rest of humanity, not by a long shot.

Those new grads had been given the best education in the world. And naturally gifted with free will, to do good for society and be elevated, or to do bad by screwing the next generations further and getting reviled for it.

Life is never a bed of roses. It comes with obstacles along the journey of life. Some just sit, wail and whine. Some stupidly bang against the obstacle in the hope of removing it or moving it back, not even knowing how big it is. Some worse still, make use of others by stepping over their heads in the hope to outclimb the obstacle.

But there some who blaze the trial for others by finding other paths around it, no matter how long it takes. We are only flawed mortals, and do make mistakes. This is how we mankind progressed, by learning from it and evolving. But some unfortunately refuse to admit to mistakes, repeating it often and thus never progressing, but even regressing.

Today, our world resources had not ended. Our tech and science had continued to advance. To progress, it is only finding out the needs of our world and meeting those needs, regardless if we are going to work for others or for ourselves.

Good luck to all. Cheers!

Welcome to the real world.

Finally some honesty.

My dad gave me this same advice in 1982, when I graduated from high school, "You're Screwed", but I also remember, "Don't let the door kick you in the rear". It never did or at least his never did!

That is a pitiful excuse of a man who could potentially generate the smallest bit of determination in an otherwise criminal world (I mean the speaker not my dad). My guess they are not graduating from Criminal Justice! LOL Lord knows that is a growing industry!

Poor Graduates, best to go back into school and tack on more loans and do your part at exhausting the devil's handouts! Then go Civil Servant and be the machine! (sorry, that last part was sarcasm!).

Really is sad to get bad news on a day of rejoicing!

If he really gave a crap, he would be screaming this from the rooftops, metaphorically obviously, and not waiting until after the students wasted all that money..... Too little too late really. Like telling the guy who had his fingers bit off by the bear, not to poke the bear

NAFTA was created long before the financial crisis, when employment was up and wealth at least was still shared. Many, espacially empathetic americans including politicians, were caught up with the euphoria of empathy for wealth to shared further, lied by corporations and the rich elites whom had agendas of their own and knew full well where the economy was heading, for they had the fullest data kept under cover.

Today, in America, we saw the truth and realization of what not only NAFTA had done to americans, but many other policies smirkingly pushed by the GOP puppets.

It is ok to make mistakes none are perfect, more so those whom were empathetic, for that's only how we can progress. But it would be foolish today to continue making and repeating the same mistakes, such as what the GOP are doing today, holding the economy hostage, getting nothing done in order to protect the rich elites, and allowing the young and brightest of america, grads and non-grads, suffer.

Truth is painful, but nevertheless, an issue we have to confront courageously, or only more and the next needed innocent generations whom look upon us with trust to do the right thing for us all, will suffer....
