Isn't the incumbent politician always the one on the defensive? The incumbent has to defend what he/she's
done and say what they plan to do
at the same time; the challenger only has to say what they plan to do. Thus, it's always tougher for an incumbent politician to get re-elected than
it is for a challenger to get elected for the first time. To the best of my knowledge, this rule of thumb applies all the way down from the U.S.
President to the people sitting on your local school district board.
What bothers me the most about these 'debates' is that Bush and Kerry were so close to each other that they could have shot spitwads at each other,
but they couldn't freaking look at each other or talk to each other? Then why bother to even have them in the same room? They could have just sent
videotaped answers to the questions asked, which they could have played on TV and put on the Internet...
