Greyhound bus beheader wins right to leave mental hospital

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) – A man who beheaded and cannibalized a fellow passenger on a Greyhound bus in Canada won his bid to leave the grounds of the mental hospital where he is being kept, a criminal review board ruled Thursday.

The board said the passes should only be granted if Li's treatment team believes his condition is stable and that it would be "appropriate and safe for him to leave the locked ward." He will have to be escorted at all times by a staff member and a security officer.

"It's terrible. It's disgusting," Nadine McLean, the victim's stepmother, said Thursday after she learned about the decision. "It's kind of a waste going to the review board every year when he's going to get whatever he asks for."

As part of this year's review, Li's psychiatrist, Dr. Steven Kremer, described Li as a model patient, who has shown no security risks and who has participated in treatment programs and taken up odd jobs at the hospital.

I think the system has failed the victims family,and the public,for that matter.

If this man happens to have a relapse,his Doctor should be held Liable.

If life were cliche, his doctor will probably witness the relapse first-hand.

Personally, I would take not a single issue with that development, as long as officers were quick to arrive on the scene. Only two people would deserve to die in that scenario, and the police can handle Li.

if i were a member of the victim's family i'd be waiting for him when he hit the streets.

that's just terrible...now this man will go back to society and live a normal life like none of this ever happened.

for some reason, i thought a person in his situation would just go to the criminal system...

...but the article didn't even touch upon this idea.

...so I guess he'll just go rent an apartment or buy a home and get a job and probably get married and raise a family.

I find the whole thing repulsive,actually.

What this guy did,was barbaric. If there was anyone that should stay locked up,its him.

Putting the risk,out in the street again,is asking for trouble.

In any case, yes...hospitalization should be mandatory. Or euthanasia. Like a rabid dog. Something like that requires premeditation and a whole new level of cognitive dysfunction...

He'll die of dehydration....or maybe make some chili out of his own leg.

Those in charge work under the principle that the odds are their own family will not be the next victim.

Looks like we are not alone,in thinking this Law to release him,is messed up....

They have NO idea when this guy is going to snap again.
I'm sure he seemed normal up until he started eating the guy next to him.
This guy needs to be locked up in a padded room with foam toys.

I could only imagine,what folks thought on the Bus,when this man decided to do what he did. There are more victims,in this.

Letting him out,is like letting Charles Manson out.

What makes someone so crazy that they randomly cut off peoples heads in buses?

He cut off the guys nose, ears and put them in a bag in his pocket. WHY?

I'm sure he seemed normal up until he started eating the guy next to him.

if this guy couldn't ignore his inner voice to dismember and eat parts of another human being, I'd say he has a few more moments of self editing coming.
