Bake sales, the calorie-laden standby cash-strapped classrooms, PTAs and booster clubs rely on, will be outlawed from public schools as of Aug. 1 as part of new no-nonsense nutrition standards, forcing fundraisers back to the blackboard to cook up alternative ways to raise money for kids.

Massachusetts Department of Public Health ban junk food — including pizza, 2 percent milk, bake sale items and white bread — in public schools?

The ban makes no sense with budget cuts.
If you have a child in school you know that fund raises make money, why would anyone put in a roadblock for fund raisers when no one wants new or higher taxes ?

I have absolutely no problems with this.

Although, before they begin to attack baked goods, has the schools actually sat down and looked at what their menu contains? Pot-Kettle-Black?

The problem I have with it, are budget cuts in education, now they what to stop parents from fund raising
It's cheap , easy and baked goods sell, its like the ban on lemon-aid stands.

I have an idea, instead of concentrating on food, how about focusing on actually paying the teachers what they are worth.

My sis in law has won several awards for her teaching skills, and still only makes 28k a year. Minus what she pays for supplies, rewards, etc. The focus of this nation is so backwards.....

I bet if the organizers promised to use gmo foods in their baked goods, no one would have a problem.

Ignore the processed pizza, chicken nuggets, and fries but ban cupcakes. Great logic

I disagree vehemntly with this assinine power grab, but there is a viable alternative. When I was in high school, we'd have fruit sales in FFA every few months. Big box of oranges, apples, pears, peaches, or a 5lb bag of pecans for a little cheaper than someone would pay in a chain store, delivered by students right to the house of the orderer the day after the crates arrived in our Ag welding shop.

FFA was consistantly the top fundraiser among the vocational groups at school, kicking the ass of the VICA folks and their lollypop sales and decimating the home ec's annual baked goods sale.

That's getting silly.
Pizza can be made healthy, use a whole wheat crust, and put lots of vegies on it.

Didn't they recently call pizza a vegetable somewhere, because of the tomato sauce?

And since when is 2% milk a junk food?

If kids got the required exercise and sports, they shouldn't have to give up on certain foods. The food isn't the problem, it's the lack of exercise.

Fund raising can be done with car washes ( if they're not during drought/water shortage season), or the kids could put on sports meets and have people pledge money somehow.
Craft sales maybe?

I personally, love bake sales.

This is, IMHO, bureaucratic red tape at it's finest. With all the social issues this nation faces, we're no longer allowing the moms to cook the kids brownies? Ridiculous.

And I get the counter point, the whole "obesity epidemic." But a school bake sale isn't why your kid is overweight. You, as a parent, should know why your kid is overweight.

sounds like anything not approved by the system is going to be considered bad for you and after watching Jamie Olivers attempt to improve school meals in America i can imagine that in a polar country like the USA where you are either one way or the other in view points you will get alot of people who do things just to cause political problems for their enemies

I think this is a great idea.
Next they should Ban the use of MSG. Declare it the poison which it is. Outlaw the manufacture of it.
It does have a lot to do with the obesity problem. Research MSG & obesity.

There are more ways to sponsor fundraisers than selling sweet junk.
Have talent show.
Have a school play.
Clean out their houses and have a sale of this and that.

I told everyone that once the smokers became a dead horse, "they" would start beating on the fatter folks.

Well, I also said that I would point out when your rights were being taken away. And, as a smoker, I shal revel in it. We deserve what we get, because what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

So if one moral must be pushed, than all morals must be pushed.

After the obese folks, booze will be next. Well it will happen in tandum, since booze causes fat build up.

(Also take note how, once again, our rights are leaving to "Save the Children". I guess Joe Camel was a fat snack loving camel too!)

Anyone who supports this is embracing ignorance to its core! Tis better to ban personal choices than to educate? So its ok for me support marriage between a man and a woman and tell others that same sex couples aren't capable of making healthy/good decisions??? Oh and its for the sake of the children of course!

As with what the earlier poster expressed, who sold fresh fruit, ...when given a choice...

All hail the food police.

The pizza served in school is not healthy, it is processed garbage. Nearly everything served in school lunches are. Even the salads have stale GMO tomatoes in them.
