That was a joke about Australia being more civilised.

Sorry for the offense.

I think we can all agree that the use of ALL CAPS is internet SCREAMING and can be quite annoying.
Hey, it's been discussed before and ATS even has a Public Service Announcement [PSA]:
The use of ALL CAPS

This thread is NOT about Australia, regional jokes or anything other than the discussion of CAPITALS.
So, please post ON TOPIC.

I don't agree. I sometimes use it just because I am illustrating a point. And when I want to illustrate a point I am using all caps minimally.

once we have banned capital letters , we should sieze the initative and quickly follow it up with bans on :

capital cities
capital [ ecconomics ]

and top it off [ pun intended ] with a ban on heads - as the word is derived from the latin ` caputt ` meaning head

off with his caputt

Well, to reply to the OP before reading the pages of thread, I'd agree to a point.

ALL CAPITAL LETTERS CAN BE ANNOYING. T H E R E . A R E . E V E N . W A Y S . T O . M A K E . I T . W O R S E

Until or unless ATS finds a way to give us an editor with true typographic controls though, capital letters would seem to be the best was for EMPHASIS of a certain word or two within an otherwise lengthy bit of text. Just my thinking on it.

Yes, that's how I use all caps.

There are two other ways to emphasize
Size
emphasize
and
Headline

emphasize

Neither should be used extensively...

it's called FREE SPEECH.
something that's already severely lacking on this website.

I for one admit to using all caps when I feel to lazy to use italic or bold for emphasis. I don't see the big issue....sure it can be annoying when someone overuses it, but it isn't worth punishing everyone by taking it away because a few abuse it.
I think the mods are busy enough without playing cap police all day.

Possibly over 4 pages in so far so this might not even be read. Will someone tell me what the big deal is about CAPITALS. I don't notice until they are pointed out and then I am still not sure if the reply is really talking about some other unknown meaning i am unaware of. Thanks in advance for any advice that comes my way.

Fair enough.... I'd ask about colors, fonts and more, since I've seen staff type folks who apparently got issued the Cap'n Crunch decoder ring with the right codes....but if i started using those highlights, everyone would start using them and we'd look like a paint store after an industrial accident in no time.

I take your note about sparingly though. To thy own self ..and all that as I gaze in a mirror.

To each his own about colors, but I find them a distraction if used more than sparingly.
I like them to get someone's attention.....WOW!!!

but multi-colored posts...I try to not even read.....they bother my eyes.
Also, the coding for colors doesn't allow for the use of contractions.....

I wish someone told me that sooner so I didn't have to learn the hard way...

I have absolutely no understanding of why that would bother anyone.

With all sincerity....BIG DEAL.

Peace

I skimmed your opening post and I have come to this conclusion...
I am one of those members who sometimes uses capital letters!
I don't SEE anything wrong with it

If I were screaming onboard, then all my letters would be capitals.
I would usually capitalize a word to make sure others knew what
I meant or felt.
I will sometimes type what I really want to say and then delete it.

Germanicus,
We use caps as a way of emphasizing words or phrases. The use of the caps is not unlike, slightly raising your
voice when speaking to someone to emphasize a word or phrase. When using this medium to communicate with others, it's difficult to express yourself without using caps. So, without your knowing it, you are...VIOLATING MY FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH AND THE FREE EXPRESSION OF MY THOUGHTS.

Shame on you, you seemed like such a nice young man, you should be more positive when your dealing with the PUBLIC. Are you a RON PAUL supporter?

I don't agree to wantonly banning anything and everything because someone thinks is an annoyance.

If this were the case EVERYTHING (see what I did there?
) would be banned everywhere.

But I do agree with you OP. It is commom courtesy and a show of civility to avoid shouting and excessive caps. There are certain posters that use this tactic to mock and deride certain topics and avatars with clever uses of punctuation and CAPS on nearly every post.

This method easily skirts the terms of usage on civility and decorum, yet is plainly obvious to those who can identify subtext.

It REALLY is quite......obnoxious! DONTCHA THINK??
