I have no idea why it failed (if it did indeed fail). Could be anything from being shot down, to mechanical problems, to sabotage, to NK themselves did a abort on it (IE they just wanted to shoot the rocket as a statement).

Apparently it crashed into the sea. I knew it! It was those classified "sharks with lasers" that we have roaming the seas!

Another missile launch, a couple hundred more and we can know what it felt like to live in the 1960s.

Given NK's track record, I'm leaning more to the following:

1) They launched the rocket, going on about how it was for peaceful purposes, etc, etc, and then after launch, detonated it themselves, so they could then turn around and claim that it was shot down, the world is treating them unfairly, etc, etc.

2) Same as above, except that it actually failed on it's own due to something wrong with it (but not sabotage), and NK will use this to spin the same message: we're being picked on, etc.

We'll just have to see though.

Maybe they are just saying it failed to keep people calm.
