The PAGER details for this are not out yet but there are several million people in the affected area.

The new agencies seem a little confused saying it is off shore when it appears to be on shore.

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — A magnitude-7.2 earthquake has struck just off the coast of central Chile, prompting an emergency evacuation order for people living near the ocean in case it spawns a tsunami.

The quake struck 20 miles (32 kilometers) north-northwest of Talca, one of the hardest-hit cities in the huge quake that devastated central Chile two years ago.

There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries, but the government ordered people living near shore to head for higher ground along a long stretch of the coast.

Bloomberg

Chile’s government emergency office requested the evacuation of coastal areas after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean off Constitucino, a village south of Santiago that was destroyed by a tsunami in 2010.

No pager information yet.

This agrees with the GeoAzur tensor solution which also got 7.1 Mw so I think you can say that will be the final value.

Just starting to show on the LISS seismos now.

Still no PAGER data. Not good.

This is the location of the quake.

Shaking intensity moderate so hopefully won't be too bad.

See USGS pages.

The Associated Press is reporting collapse of the telephone system and that the USGS initially reported that the quake occurred offshore. People along the coast were told to evacuate to higher ground.

I presume you mean San Francisco?

I don't see a connection between the two, but time no doubt will tell.

We are three months into the year and have had 4 mag 7 quakes. At that rate we would have 16 by the end of the year. That is well under the rate of 22 in the last couple of years.

Same goes for mag 6. Currently the average is on the low side. 21 Dec 2012 is going to be a damp squib at this rate

Confirmation from the tensor solutions. This has now been downgraded to a Mag 7.1

USGS

Update : Universidad de Chile Santiago has increased the Magnitude from 6.4 to 6.8. The depth is now reported as 33.4 km. Both values are stronger than initial reports, but are a lot less severe than the data from other seismological agencies.

earthquake-report.com...

They are not taking account on the 6.8 ML being the Richter scale.

I can't see any aftershocks to speak of for this - is that usual? I would have thought there would have been a few by now? Or maybe I'm not looking in the right places

Why do you think a 7.6 will hit there on that precise date? You don't think they may have an EQ on the 29th?

Just wondering where you got this info from.

There will be aftershocks but there are considerably fewer aftershocks in Chile than in some areas such as Japan.

You can expect one at the Mag 6 level fairly soon I guess.
