Beatings, Sexual Abuse, Electric Shock: US Torture Camps 'Still Operative'

A new report reveals that US forces continue to send detainees to prisons where torture is practiced, despite NATO's promise to suspend prison transfers last September. The report carried out by the Afghan Independent Rights Commission and the Open Society Foundation documents numerous cases of torture in Afghan detention facilities between February 2011 and January 2012. The document has credible evidence in 11 recent cases where practices such as “beatings, suspension from the ceiling, electric shocks, threatened or actual sexual abuse, and other forms of mental and physical abuse” were commonplace.

Researchers also discovered widespread violations of prisoners’ rights were in evidence, “including the right to counsel and family notification.” According to the study, these techniques are “routinely used to obtain confessions or other information.” Abuses were found to be committed both in Afghan National Police facilities (ANP) and the National Directorate of Security facilities (NDS). Moreover, the document presents evidence that even after NATO announced it would suspend prison transfers in September, “some US forces or personnel continue to transfer individuals to NDS Kandahar.”

The risk of torture for the detainees upon arrival was “widely acknowledged.” In spite of this fact, “CIA or other US intelligence officials” may be sending prisoners to banned facilities. The report states that although the Afghan government has maintained its commitment to stamping out torture in its prisons, it has done very little to address the issue. “In some cases, instead of dismissing and prosecuting responsible officials, the Afghan government has simply reassigned officials to other detention facilities.”

How much longer is this crap going to continue? Disgusting. Horrific. Complete lack of respect/compassion for humanity. Not only does NATO appear to be well aware of this and looking the other way, I think a larger issue is our government, military and intelligence community has little, if any respect for the rights of others. This torture is illegal, has been previously "outed", confronted, and our military and intelligence officials simply went back to what they were previously doing.

We all remember when pictures came out of the torture/sexual abuse in the prisons. Well it strongly appears that stuff hasn't stopped and is continuing, and I hope people don't ignore it or not pay attention simply because gruesome pictures haven't been released. Do we need them? We all have a good idea of what this torture looks like, and in no way, shape or form is it acceptable at this time.

Correct TPTB have NO respect for the rights of others. They don't have to even pretend to, they are protected NO matter what they do, and make a nice income doing so

When will this stop ? Well, never the world has always been this way since the Roman Empire at least. We are the cattle and they are the farmers.

S&F for you!

But don't you think it's necessary to have fear in citizens? If there is no fear, there is no power. With no power, there is no control.
When people go on rants about "illuminati" "corrupt governments" and all that juicy stuff, they never truly analyze why they do it. Humans are ignorant and unjust, so they must have a greater force to lead them. (that's why the Christian god "God" was created.) This also applies to every other religion.

A valid point. Get the gangs in prison under control, and we might see less career criminals.

This is a horrible reality and more evidence for why most other countries hate us. We invade other countries for these same reasons, then turn around and do it ourselves.

To those who are saying that we need to concentrate on our prison system first, where is the rule that we have to tackle things one at a time? I'm also concerned about the prison system here at home and have written a few threads about its privitazation. If you want to improve the system, start rallying agaisnt privitazation.

Back to the main topic, isn't this more evidence for why Obama should have his Nobel Peace Prize taken away?
I think so.

How racist with dune dweller being another synonym for the epiphet sand ?

All this sex abuse and torture IS in American-operated prisons - ironically in the name of homeland "justice" and "security"

Doesn't matter if you're a "clean"(?) white boy career criminal or (a likely innocent) innocent scapegoat/perpetual token POW @ guatanamo cells - aren't we all created and thus treated equal, not sodomized equal.

Shame on America the most shady and hypocritical police state in the world.
