I've gotten really interested in urban legends lately.
I know technically they are not conspiracy theories but theres always that fine line between legends and reality that is interesting. Just been reading up on urban legends and the true stories behind them:

www.cracked.com...

Anybody know any good urban legends that are based on reality, and conspiratorial in nature?

Apologies if this is not the right topic for ATS I am relatively new here.

Why, it just so happens there is a thread here from the very recent past, I think you may find fitting for what you're looking for.

www.abovetopsecret.com... (Black Star Canyon Legends, California)

I'll not steal the other members niche for a story by throwing in all my context and perspectives, but to say the legend would be about Devil Worship and Satanic cults...mixed with missing people and close calls to being that which go as far back as the 80's when I was around there. It probably goes clear back to my parents generation, when they grew up there. lol....

Just my little contribution to the topic. The truth is out there...with oh SO much more.

i got one hell of an urban legend for you, and im pretty sure its true, because it happened to me yesterday!

the reason im writing this is because after it happened i had one of those, "wait a minute!...what if?"

yesterday me and 2 friends decided we wanted to go hiking in the middle of the florida everglades...so we gathered up some basic hiking gear and off we went...

long story short..after hiking for about 2 hours the sun started setting and we got lost, the brush was so thick that we could barely stick our hands out in front of us...*note to self NEVER hike in the middle of the everglades*

thankfully one of my friends was in the army and he knew some basic navigation so he lead us to our parked car, but there was a problem....our car was about 50 ft directly in front of us...to our left and right and behind us there was nothing but thick everglades sawgrass brush...

so here we are, we finally made our way out and have sight of our car, but the problem was that in front of us was about a 12-15 ft deep canal, that im sure contained alligators, and god knows what else...

so in order to cross to our car, we had to chop a tree down, and lay it across the canal to get to our car, so we start chopping away when suddenly my freind says "do you hear that?....get down!"..sure enough the sound of an atv is heard in the distance and it starts approaching us...so we get down and the sound gets closer...finally the sound stps right where my parked car is and here we are laying on the ground...

finally the atv leaves the area...we get back up, we chop the tree down and we get across to the car...but as we clear the final shrubs to get to our car there is a "police officer" waiting for us with his gun drawn at us...he asked us if we had any guns, and what we were doing there... i told him we had no guns just knives, and we were just hiking...

heres the part that got me though...he said to us as he escorted us out of the entrance... he said "dont you boys know who lives out here?" we said no... he says "well theres a crazy man that lives out here, and he likes to impersonate cops, and kidnapp people and take'em back to his place and dismember them and feed their body parts to his live stock, you guys shouldnt be around here wondering around its dangerous, y'know what i mean?"

me and my friends said yes and quickly got in our car and left... thinking back the "officer" never had a badge or name tag...and was driving around in an atv, in the middle of the everglades...

what if that cop was actually the crazy man that likes to impersonate cops and kidnapp people and kill them?

lets just say im never going back to that patch of woods again

Nice! hope it's just some guy that dresses like that and tells that story to keep people from trespassing or something and not a real crazy person.

Here's a rather interesting one, it's actually been passed around on social networks.

This website explains a little about the story, and further refers to it as a myth that's purpose is to show people how violent people in the drug business can be.

Urban legends are always a hoot aren't they?
There definately is a fine line between what might have been real once and some sprinkling of creative drama..
Saying that, with regards to the baby having been used as a drug parcel, I hate to admit it (in hindsight I wish I had never seen the documentary) but I have seen a movie, a very underground movie back in the VHS days and it was probably a copy of a copy of a copy, but it had what I believe was a Mexican hospital theatre room being filmed. It contained a number of uniformed officers and doctors, and a dead baby that was on the table. The camera held still as it would to document the situation as the clothes were removed with scissors, revealing a fresh line of stitches from the top of the chest to the groin area. Slowly the stitches were removed, and several bags of either coke or smack were revealed. There were no organs to be seen. I have no doubt, none at all, that what was videoed was real and it was not staged in any way. Perhaps the baby had already died and thus was used? Perhaps the baby was killed? Who can ever know? But perhaps this is one urban myth steeped in truth....

You have a better chance of seeing Bigfoot than finding someone who successfully signed up and purchased a policy through Obamacare.

I've heard an urban legend about the gateway to Hell actually existing somewhere on Earth my whole childhood, my whole life really. I always took it with a grain of salt until only recently, I can post about it more in-depth soon.

Has anyone else here ("else" meaning besides those who posted above) had an urban legend happen to them, or know of someone who swore an urban legend happened to them or to someone they knew? Closest I have is a friend's stepfather said he went to high school with a girl who walked through a cemetery in a long dress, and died of fright when the dress caught on a tombstone. He didn't mention why the girl was in the cemetery--in the urban legend version it's generally on account of a dare. This story has turned up on The Twilight Zone and other shows. The thing is, of course I never asked him when and where he went to high school let alone the girl's name and address. The friend's parents divorced, his mother passed away and he has no idea where the stepfather is or whether he is alive or dead--so not much chance of checking out this one. I do know some people who knew people who had true ghost stories happen to them but this is the only urban legend I can think of right now.

Not sure what this was but it's appearance seems similar or fitting to "Mothman."
My husband and I moved across the country to a location I later learned is ripe for urban legends eye witness accounts and the paranormal.
We were watching tv late at night and our dog starts going nuts at the kitchen window. He's usually right when he warns us so we thought perhaps a bear - we were on acreage and only ones out there. So we both go to the window to peer out. Husband turns the lights off so we can see out. Infront of us plain as day standing at the tree line 20 feet away from the window is a massive blacker than black form with the most fearful blood red eyes I've seen! Different looking from animal eyes that are red. These were very large, almost like the classic alien sketches with the huge glossy eyes with no pupils. But dark blood red. We were stunned. We rubbed our eyes in disbelief and asked each other if we were really both seeing this! A minute must've passed just standing there like idiots watching it. It stared right back. The eyes disappeared for a split second then reappeared while it's form never moved. It had the most intense look of rage, like pure hatred, evil. The hair on the back of my neck was straight up! We started yelling to each other, yelling from the adrenaline I suppose. What do we do?! We are alone no backup, cell phone is dead I didn't plug it in yet, do we let the dog out, what can that thing do, why won't it leave, why us, why now?! My husband swore and ran for our biggest gun. I ran for the ammo box. We both knew we had to be ready - it wasn't afraid of us. The dog continued to bark and growl at the window. We got back and it was gone. The dog stopped barking and left. We didn't believe it was gone. Obviously it was intent on something, acting somehow. We stayed up for hours watching out all windows but never saw it again. The next day we went to inspect where it had been standing. It had been at tree line infront of a clump of trees. We looked at the limbs that had been level to its eyes and were so glad it hadn't come after us.. The tree limbs were over 7 feet up off the ground. We ended up never seeing it again and leaving the area for work reasons 6 months later. So unnerving. I'll never forget how purely angry it looked at us. As far as I know, the only creature that matches what this looked like is "Mothman."
But from other peoples experiences with this that I've read my question is, why didn't it attack us or act whatsoever? Very strange!

I will recount a tale that is from my dad, from where he lived in London, UK.

I was around the age of ten, when my dad first recounted an experience he had whilst playing on the street with his friends, as a child. It happened back in London, in the early 1950’s. My dad, Roger, met up with some friends during school holidays, and would often mess about in town, wondering about, buying magazines, exchanging sweets. It was during one particular day that he was in town, far from home, and began to feel the urge to use the toilet. Taking the long walk back home to take a pee didn’t seem so enticing, so he headed over to the nearest public toilet whilst his friends waited outside.

I’m guessing it was much like any other public toilet – smelly, dirty, walls coated in colourful graffiti. My dad stepped in to what he presumed to be an empty toilet: all of the cubicle doors appeared to be open and vacant, from what he recalls. He stepped inside one. My dad used the toilet. Whilst he was in there, he heard someone close one of the toilet doors next to him. Unperturbed – after all, why shouldn’t someone else come in and use the facility? – my dad flushed, let himself out, and began washing his hands at the sink.

It was whilst he was doing this that he felt something grab his ankle from behind. He spun around and looked down. What he saw frightened him: It was an extremely large hand, the skin looked almost grey, and there was hair across the back of the hand. It was reaching out, from beneath the locked cubicle door, and gabbing firmly the back of my dad’s ankle and leg, trying to pull him.

Unnerved and shocked, he shook his leg free of the large, inhuman looking hand, and ran from the toilets, terrified. He fled past his friends, saying he needed to go home. He never returned to that particular area again. He never forgot the episode.

My dad, all those years later, never did feel able to explain away the experience. Of course, time can distort memory, and certainly in childhood, one’s imagination can flee to places of unreality in the blink of an eye. Yet my dad feels absolutely certain about what he saw – and attests strongly to the realistic appearance of the devilish hand that tried to grab him.

When I was told this tale, I was captivated: I am someone who has been fascinated by weird and dark tales over the years. Anything from hauntings, to urban legends to conspiracy theories interested me. Knowing my dad to be of a more sceptical nature, I trusted he wasn’t enhancing any of the account, and was telling me his experience to the best of his ability and with the finest details that his memory could muster.

It was something I never forgot myself. It was when I was a bit older, that I started hearing more about occurrences like this. Apparently, a being known as “Hairy Hands” has made somewhat a name for itself/himself in the UK.

Most of the account springs from Devon, in a place called Dartmoor. Miles of fields and long stretches of roads make up most of what is known as Dartmoor – it is quiet, except for the lounging wildlife strewn across the greenery. It is desolate, far from busy towns.

There have been reports over the years of people who have been driving their vehicle across this countryside and finding a pair of disembodied hairy hands appear before them, only to take control of the steering wheel. Due to the loss of control, it was reported that cars would veer off the road and drivers were shaken up from the ensuing road accident. Whilst sceptics said it was likely due to people driving on unfamiliar roads, those who say they witnessed the hands stuck by their story. Many of these incidents occurred in the early twentieth century.

Not only in the UK have odd occurrences with creepy hands been recounted. In Akasaka Weekly Mansion, Tokyo, Japan, there have been many accounts of people who, whilst in bed at night, have seen and felt disembodied hands reaching out and touching/grabbing them. The appearance of these seem to differ, from account to account, though all I have read about seem to attest to the fact that the hands are disembodied.

Whilst treading the boards across the internet, I stumbled on quite a number of accounts involving large, hairy hands, or disembodied hands. No one, myself or my dad included, can explain away exactly what happened that day when the large, hairy hand grabbed him. Was it an inhuman being, trying to hurt him? Was it merely an adult trying to mess about with an impressionable young boy? Or something entirely different? The answer can be speculated upon, but never known with certainty.

I will always remember this. As I grew older, my unease at using public toilets probably stemmed from my dad’s tale! Being someone utterly drawn to such weird stories, it’s been an interesting one to share with others as I’ve grown older.

Thanks for reading.

When I was a kid, there was an urban legend about Jaguar car (maybe spread by some actual owners
) that if you try to pull out and break Jaguar sign, blade will come out and cut your fingers off. It was the time when Mercedes was a popular target for that.
