If you read the full article, she also recounts how she got a job as an art teacher at a Catholic School. She was upfront about her religion and sexuality at the interview and was asked only if she would be OK taking the kids to mass from time to time.

You can't possibly tell me that they never bothered to tell her that both her religion and lifestyle choice barred her from receiving communion. I think the whole incident at her mother's funeral was staged to create negative publicity for the Church.

It's a church and a religion. They set the rules. You play by them or they can exclude you.
