I am wondering if it is possible to retrieve the diagnostic codes for this car myself or do I have to take it and have it done. On some older cars I remember being able to do some process to get the codes. My favorite was using a paperclip on my old firechicken.

In canada partsource will do it for free. In the us autozone will do it for free or a small fee. I would recommend finding a ford or an escort forum. The guys on there will be able to help you save some cash.

You can get a simple code retriever at Sears or something for around 50 bucks
