While we're all up in arms over SOPA and PIPA, the government of Iran continues to monitor its citizen's Internet access. The government has gone so far as to sentence a programmer to death for insulting the sanctity of Islam because of a piece of software used by a porn site.

The Star reports that programmer and Canadian resident Saeed Malekpour was arrested during a visit to Iran in 2008 while visiting his sick father. During his incarceration Malekpour was forced to make televised confessions on state TV after being tortured.

They asked me to falsely confess to purchasing software from the UK and then posting it on my website for sale. I was forced to add that when somebody visited my website, the software would be, without his/her knowledge, installed on their computer and would take control of their webcam, even when their webcam is turned off. Although I told them that what they were suggesting was impossible from a technological point of view, they responded that I should not concern myself with such things.

Makes us think, doesn't it?

This, among others are FAR worse than us if SOPA is ever to be passed.

Just, sighs.... just oppose it. I can give you many examples.

The worst ever in my mind is North Korea. I remember a French artist coming over to NK for a visit. He was experienced with the internet and computers and web design. They kept asking him what HTTP means. And such.

We need to stand up.

Unfortunately, he visited Iran,on humanitarian issues, and now faces the death sentence.
Anyone with Western credentials,passports,etc....... I am sure is under a microscope, when they go their to visit,as are those in North Korea.

Not a good time to visit those countries, under ANY circumstances.

Looks like another piece of anti-Iranian propaganda. They have their laws, and we have ours. I am sure there is an equal amount of transgressions being performed across the board. Just look at the bradley manning case... Not to mention all of the ones that arent even reported on.

How is it a propaganda of ANY kind? We know that some countries monitor their citizens' usage of internet. Need I say China?

The story might be anti-Iranian, but it's not propaganda. It's worth educating ourselves about these things so that we know before we visit these countries. This is unfortunately common stuff in countries under Sharia Law. In another example, somebody from Indonesia was beaten by an angry mob and later arrested for charges of blasphemy when they posted "God does not exist" on Facebook.

This is about PORN.

Millions of people inside Iran watch porn.

Millions of people inside Iran cheat on their counter parts like its the hot thing to do.

Women prostitute themselves on social networking sites.

...wow, how wrong you would say right?

Meanwhile, meth is cheaper than cigarettes and meat. Mullahs don't know what a weed leaf is. A million + drug addicts in the capital and counting. You cannot openly criticize the government. Torture prisons where those torturing you cannot even read.

And they execute someone living in Canada for porn software. Because we ALL KNOW, that sexually repressed religious clowns sure don't have any skeletons in the closet...ow wait...

:shk: Telling the truth isn't 'anti' anything. It's just the truth. And where is your human compassion? Did you miss the part where he was pushed to FALSELY CONFESS and then sentenced to DEATH?

They asked me to falsely confess ...

gizmodo.com...

Geeeze ... this is EXACTLY why no one can trust anything that comes out of the Iranian Government.
They kill their own. They set up 'spies' and citizens for 'crimes against God' BS.
Talk about a government that is trying to drag people back 1,000 years!

it's propaganda

think about it
article states it's raison de etre from the start:

if that's not enough to set off your spidey-sense

RLMFAO, here it's implied that Iranians are SOOOOO STUPID, that the above-mentioned would go unnoticed, maybe in some parts of the west, but seriously!

islamophobia like all phobias are treatable; as i'm sure you'd know better than i, you might want to look into that

and what has canada done to help this guy out, i mean it's been 4 years, HELLO!
now they want to make a big stink about it?

i wonder why?

This.

And people wonder why I've realised that a lot of ATS members including NeoVain are idiots who are anti-West for the hell of it, just like those idiotic human rights people who take governments to court because a known pedophile finds his or her prison cell uncomfortable or George Galloway who campaigned as a pro-Saddam Hussein supporter claiming he was a nice and misunderstood guy while ignoring the mass genocide Saddam committed against his own people in the 80s and 90s.
