Alyn Libman won a $15,000-a-year scholarship to the University of California at Berkeley with a resume that showed more than just Libman's athletic achievement and academic potential.

It also showed years of ridicule, beatings and threats, along with Libman's decision to become a boy in 11th grade.

For those seeking financial aid to attend college, it doesn't necessarily hurt to be gay or transgender. An increasing number of charities, professional groups and universities offer scholarships on the basis of sexual orientation.

More than 50 such scholarships are available nationwide -- from the $1,000 scholarships that Zami, an advocacy group in Atlanta, is giving to 21 black gays this year, the $2,000 awards the United Church of Christ distributed to gay seminarians, and the $3,000 fellowships George Washington University administers so gays can spend a semester studying politics in the nation's capital.

Now I have no problem with homosexuals, transgenders, black, white, purple or green individuals, but to me this is paramount to religious/ethnic/sexual bias in the same way that as of the KKK organization. If you have the grades or the experience then fine! You deserve the scholarship/job/etc., but no one deserves more then someone else simply because of prejudice thinking.

Forget about coming together as equals. Lets subdivide ourselves further and further until every little division has the 'Us against them' mentality. Idiots!

You're absolutly right.. there's no way we can all be equals when everyone's always playing favorites..

reverse predudice is the worst thing in america today. Affirmative action is up there too. They still look at the skin tone of teh person not what they achieve first. Its sickening. AFFIRMATIVE ACTION is sicking.

Also to note being a straight middle class white kid sucks! No one wants to give money to me to the colege i wanna go to but cant afford.

It'd make my life easier...

I'm wondering, what's stopping me from just saying I'm gay to get some cool cash? I mean, what sort of proof do they need? Will a polaroid do, or do they need full 8mm coverage?

In a similar case, the hardest people to get into Rice University are the straight, white, males from Texas. WHy? They want diversity. Sound mor to me like they want to look like cultural trendsetting gurus. If youve got the grades, GO!

I'm a straight, white, young, healthy male.

God, I get nothing in this world.

If you think it's bad now, just wait until you're a straight, white, unemployed, disabled OLD male.

The secret cultural message is - "You're type is responsible for all the wrongs in the world so hand over your women and you just disappear.

Scholarship money is provided by private benefactors who have no affiliation with the public welfare, they have the right to limit who gets their money. After all, its their money.

I find this disturbing and disgusting. Think about this, if a female heterosexual wrote an essay about how she was relentlessly teased and labeled the class slut because she slept with 100 men during her senior year I can guarantee you she would not get a scholarship unless it was some porn company who wanted to help put her through school so that she could become their business manager.

I think this is just wrong, Wrong, WRONG!!!!

hmmmmmm. I'm a gay grad student that doesn't get that scholarship. But I do get to read this thread.

Sorry gay scholarships piss people off. Stupid gay people have just as many rights as you! They can get married if they live in Boston. They can walk down the street holding each others hands without even thinking of the repurcussions. They get treated equally in high school. Gay people are never scorend, do not experience violence....who the hell do they think they are getting a scholarship.

(So what if they get a scholarship, they have had to be braver than most straight people have ever thought to)

think about it

Well you said the key word - scholarships. This doesn't mean anyone gets into a school with prefernece over another student, it's who is awarded scholarships. Yes, it's private money, but students are awarded scholarships for many reasons including sports, or wining a contest. It's beyond just who is paying the bill, even though that should be enough of a reason for this not to be an issue for CNN to be reporting on. Perhaps the need for a gay, lesbian, or transgendered student perspective for leadership roles, reporting, political action, etc, and attracting these students has a great benefit for the university itself.

For a second there I thought you were serious, and I was going to have to make a huge post, then the sarcasm sunk in

Ok well then because i'm blond and have experienced dirty looks because i'm pretty, or I get aholes trying to pick me up, or treating me like some mattress back, disrespecting me, or *gasp*even some people making blonde jokes...
Or they just think your not competent for the job because of the color of your hair... I guess I deserve a damn scholarship too...

Alert:

College has nothing to do with being smart anymore...
It's all about who experienced the most drama in their life.

Exactly. Its all about hell i have a kid who was raped when they were a kid here arent we such a compassionate school. Nothing against gay people or these scholarships But i do think there is a big difference in being gay and being a minority. In admissions we all should be treated jsut has humans noting more and noting less. I can understand these scholarships tho. ITs an advantage in livin in a capitalistic society.

A scholarship is just money given to a student and can be for ANYTHING. It has nothing to do with not needing to be smart to go to college as hinted about above. C'mon. People go to college because they play sports, because mommy and daddy pay for it, because they work their butts off, because they are given acedemic scholarships, because they work for a company that pays etc. It has NOTING to do with actual intelligence, nor should it.

College isn't just about knowledge either. People like seeing a degree - it means you dealt with 4 years of a lot of crap and know how the world works a little better, and you might have picked something up in your field along the way.

Having a scholarship for gay, lesbian, transgendered students is NO BIG DEAL. It's hardly news, and I can't understand why people are getting their panties in a bunch about it. It's not an affirmative action type issue, its just free money given for one reason out of thousands. Who cares? It's not my money, but I could get a scholarship for someone for writing a good haiku or cooking a mean cookie or some other nonimportant reason. Just about anyone can qualify for a scholarship if you do the research.
