The President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, does not support the idea of giving the EU citizens a right to choose directly the president of the Commission. On the contrary, Mr Prodi would give national parliaments and members of the European parliament a say in choosing the best candidate, which obviously would strengthen authority and legitimacy of the Commission.

According to the Financial Times, Mr Prodi and other EU commissioners have discussed the possibility of having direct elections in order to give the future president a massive democratic mandate. However, they have concluded that it is almost impossible to run a meaningful election campaign all across the EU.

My comment :

It's like to write: " Now, US citizens will not vote anymore for their President. The State Governors will be responsible for the Presidential elections. They'll chose the President and the basic citizen will not have anything to say in that election "

If you want to tell them what you think about their " wonderfull idea ", you can do it there : CLICK

At a time where the EU is busy synchronizing, a direct vote for a President (who, by the way, has almost only representative functions, the legislative and executive bodies being the EU parlament and commission) could be described as experimental at best. There is no reason comparing him to the american President, in power or legitimacy.

Bush got in through a corrupt vote anyway, so what's the point in fighting against it. Any government will do what they want and no matter what protest there is, they don't care. If the protests get out of hand (usually provoked) the government call in riot police then the armed forces and kick the s**t out you. Proved time and again in all countries across the globe including the UK and US.
