No there weren't any powerlines in the vicinity. It was an open, grassy area lined on one side by eucalyptus trees. We were facing toward a small hill about 60 yards away.

This may be of interest - sounds similar to your experience.

A Stockton bus driver who saw the sky light up like daylight as he was beginning his shift early Sunday morning says it was the talk of his passengers.

East West Coaches Stockton bus driver Don Spicer said that about five minutes into his shift, which began at 5.10am, he saw a big flash in the sky, then flickering that lasted about three to four seconds.

This sounds like cloud to cloud lightning or a meteor blowing up in the atmosphere to me. My experience occurred on a clear night and was accompanied by very little sound. Interesting story though, and thanks for posting it.
