"As reported by the Information Management Group of the Navy, naval carrier group (CAG) of the Northern Fleet is preparing for long hikes. Heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser "Admiral of the navy of Soviet Union Kuznetsov" and a large anti-submarine ship "Admiral Chabanenko" in December 2011 will go in the ocean zone." www.rg.ru...

Comments on the current situation of the former commander of the 5th Mediterranean Squadron operations, the former Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Valentin Selivanov:
www.stringer.ru...

"In Tartus now there aren't any our ships. There is only our floating workshop and storage platform. A month ago also there came the Black Sea Fleet patrol ship "Smetlivy", but she has already returned to Sevastopol. Perhaps it is those "three ships", reported by news agencies. And the "Kuznetsov" and "Chabanenko" in December will indeed go to the region."

So.....Let not be fast to send 3 or even 10 ships in Syria, as sources from Syria and Israel already did. But also let not be blind for the option Russia to intervene at the moment least expected. Or most expected and declared, and therefore sidelined as impossible for WW3 start.

that may be a diversion, to create the illusion that Russia will defend Syria. A simple check of the weapons of Kuznetsov and Chabanenko show they alone cannot match the US forces in the region. Not conventionally. This is a political demonstration, or a military diversion. Or preposition for a first nuclear strike. Then these ships have enough nuclear missiles for the region, plus submarines and additional support from Black Sea fleet. But if Russia prepares for a first strike, one region is not enough. Then we should expect even bigger moves towards the US coasts, something we do not see today as we saw in 2008. Of course we don't know what submarines are there, or what other unannounced weapons probably based in space will be used. Russia cannot strike a little.

Still, we don't know how the situation will evolve in Syria. It may happen that indeed Russia supports Assad regime in real terms, and it is USA that does not go there militarily/ A reverse situation from Iraq where Russia refrained only to verbal opposition but did not help Saddam regime despite giving him assurances.

We also have the example of Georgia where the West did not provide a direct military help for Saakashvili. And that might be the best help for him, because in that way they especially France managed to achieve the Russian withdrawal from Georgia mainland. The other way was to start WW3 for Georgia. Russia already moved 20 tactical nuclear missiles Tochka (SS21) in South Ossetia and USA sent a ship in Black Sea with 96 tomahawks (nuclear capable). The entire late 2008 Russian demonstration in the Caribbean (ships, bombers in Venezuela, submarines) was a follow up of that. Then it was "Peter the Great" sent to the Caribbean together with "Admiral Chabanenko". "Peter the Great" is Kirov class, the same as "Admiral Kuznetsov", without a platform for planes but with more missiles. The two ships carried hundreds of missiles of various types that are designed not only as anti-air and anti-ship but also for ground targets. For example, S-300 that both ships have installed (even may be S-400) is nuclear capable and can hit ground targets as well.

I am sorry to see this thread does not get immediate attention, as such a big news should. Then someone will take the news and make it headline in some forums. Anyway, I did my work to say what few knew before it makes the headlines of Syrian and Israeli newspapers. I don't know how long it will take for the ships to reach Mediterranean, may be a week, or they may stop in France as they stopped on their way to Venezuela. Nobody knows, because seems the orders are constantly changed according to the situation.

Correction: Kuznetsov is not Kirov class but Kreml class. Nevertheless it is developed similar to Kirov or vice versus

Congrats on your post. Star and flags all round. I have been reporting on the dubious 'Russian warships in/off Syria' for the past couple of days now. I agree. The reports were completely dubious as the Russian Frigate Smitlivy was the only Russian warship active in the Mediterranean. She and the rescue ship Epron were exercising with NATO assets. As reported she returned back to the Black Sea Fleet a few days ago.

Now the bogus news reports currently have the Russian aircraft carrier Battle Group in the Mediterranean off Malta.

The report from the Cypriot online news report is completely bogus. It is an example of poor reporting based on little fact. It has already generated other news agencies quoting it as fact and is having a domino effect around the Internet based purely on rumour.

The reality is that the Kuznetsov Battle Group is still in Russia.

The Russian Navy Commander in Chief just inspected the Kuznetsov Carrier Battle Group yesterday. Guess what? He didn't have to fly to the Mediterranean

www.itar-tass.com...

When the Kuznetsov Battle Group deploys on its routine winter deployment it will be announced by the Russians and also reported in NATO press as it transits through the regions of interest. For example keep an eye on the Norwegian press. Facts are facts all the reporting so far on Russian Navy warships currently in the Mediterranean have heen bogus.

Another Cypriot online news report has emerged.

www.ansamed.info...

Cyprus: Russian navy nears gas drilling zone

(ANSAmed) - NICOSIA, NOVEMBER 25 - The Russian "Admiral Kuznetsov" class aircraft carrier is currently off the coast of Malta and heading for eastern Mediterranean from their base in the Barents Sea...

As you can see the story is completely bogus. An invention of reality the same as the Syrian news agency that reported that Russian warships were currently off and in Syrian territorial waters.

now it is official top news in RT.com in English. rt.com... Sea alert: Russian warships head for Syria

Together with other news as the Kaliningrad radar that Medvedev switched on, as a par of one integrated anti missile defense system.

Well, others took the top threads, as always. Now this is no more a new news.
In the same way they will learn when the big events happen. Post factum

The Russian Navy Frigate Ladny is due to enter the Mediterranean shortly.

en.rian.ru...

"The Ladny has left Sevastopol and headed for the Mediterranean. The ship's voyage began a day ahead of the schedule due to unfavorable weather forecasts," Capt. 1st Rank Vyacheslav Trukhachev said. The spokesman said the ship was scheduled to make calls at the ports of Cyprus, Malta, France and Spain.

The daily also said that in the spring of 2012, the group of Russian naval ships would enter the Syrian port of Tartus.

A source in the Russian Defense Ministry denied this information, saying the Russian aircraft carrier naval group led by the Admiral Kuznetsov did not plan to call at Syria during winter exercises in the Mediterranean Sea.
