Libertarians against stop signs?

I've heard some people say that Libertarians (members if not the actual Party) believe that all stop signs should be repalced by yield signs, since they are an infringement on individual rights.

This sounds incredibly stupid and I can't believe anyone would actually think this way in large numbers. Can anyone confirm this is BS for me? Thanks.

Well, I can confirm that if it is a Libertarian opinion that it's not a mainstream one. We are staunch protectors of personal liberty, but one has to recognize that certain community assets (roads, air, water) require government involvement at some level.

Most of us just prefer these things to be managed on a local level rather than a national one.

Stop signs certainly aren't an infringement on personal liberty. It's a bunch of bunk.

There's a difference between small "l" libertarians and big "L" Libertarians. Big "L" Libertarians being people affiliated or agreeing with the Libertarian Party. Small "l" libertarians are simply people that follow a libertarian philosophy. There can be a big difference.

There are several different forms of libertarianism. Libertarian Socialism is really just a pretty word for anarchism. This sums it up well: "adherents believe that management of the common good (socialism) is necessary, but that this should be done in a manner that preserves individual liberty and avoids concentration of power or authority (libertarianism). Some libertarian socialists say individual liberty and societal harmony are necessarily antagonistic, and anarchist philosophy must balance the two. Others feel that the two are symbiotic, and that the liberty of the individual guarantees the harmony of the society and vice-versa."

Then there's Libertarian Capitalism, the philosophy more closely associated to the LP.

There are many people that say they are libertarians, yet believe in completely different things. In fact, some libertarians say that voting in elections and the very idea of a political party are both anti-libertarian ideas.

So to answer your question: I wouldn't be suprised if a libertarian doesn't believe in stop signs, but I'd be suprised if a Libertarian did. It should be a goal of the LP to distance themselves from more anarchist libertarians.

It also sounds like propaganda from one or both of the big two parties

I have been a Libertarian for about 20 years and have never heard anything like that from us BUT have heard nonsense like this from the big two ABOUT us.

As Pistol Pete said somewhere somewhen someone MIGHT have said something that stupid but it is not now or has it ever been a platform of our party
