hi all

could anyone shed some light as to where this story came from.
when i was at school(many yrs ago) i used to go to the library after lunch and read exciting stories
like the bermuda triangle(flight 19) and a lot of tales that sound like aesops fables.
a thread today by fo******* 14* sort of jogged an old memory of a story that i read as a child
but still has a sort of meaningl to it
this is is what i remember of the story

in the days of old, a king was giving a banquet
and one of his friend of a friend whom was merily drunk and thus said to the king
tis must be a great feeling of being a mighty ruler and king of kingdoms
to which the king said,
would you like to join me tomorrow for a feast and i will show you what it feels to be a king

tomorrow comes and ( call him collin lol)
collin arrives at the kings castle and gets aquainted with the other guests
they all sit down for the feast, and there is about 50 people around a massive oak table,

as the wine is passed around, collin takes a drink and as his head leans back
he notices there is a sword above him hanging by a horses hair
he nearly chocked on his wine and apologised to the king

the roasted ducks came in on massive platers and was dished out
collin couldnt enjoy it, he sweated like a leaking water tank
every time the door opend and a maid came in, that bloody sword would wobble with the draught
collin was afraid at any minute it would come crashing down and pierce his neck

after the feast the king said to collin
thats how it feels to be a king
the sword is always there

thx in advance if anyone can help pinpointing it
cheers
dave

there was more detail but im just telling it as i remember

This is the story of "the sword of Damocles". That's from memory. You can google it from there.

It sounds more like an Edgar Allen Poe story rather than Aesop. You might want to check on that as well...Best of luck in your search.
