NYPD deliberately kept reporters and legal observers away during Zuccotti Park raid

www.n ydailynews.com

The hundreds of cops who carried out the raid on Zuccotti Park deliberately kept the press and even legal observers away from the scene — thus hiding the city’s actions from public scrutiny.

Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly deny that. The nighttime sweep simply aimed “to reduce the risk of confrontation in the park . . . to minimize disruption to the surrounding neighborhood,” Bloomberg claimed Tuesday.

The crackdown, of course, came just ahead of major solidarity marches planned for Thursday by unions and community groups on the two-month anniversary of the

This is getting out of hand. I guess they got tired of being filmed beating and pepper spraying unarmed civilians. The crack down may be considered a good thing by some people. I'm not here to argue my position on OWS, I just wanted to point out that the Police of NYC are deliberately keeping reporters and legal observers out.

If they're going to use riot gear and all that, they should have the courage to do it on camera. If they have nothing to hide then why hide it?

I have a feeling this is going to happen more often as this proceeds.

Good video from Luke Rudowski, showing the police blocking the media from the eviction.

Thank you, I haven't watched that one yet

Eventually they are going to have no cell phone/camera protest zones punishable by crime. I just made that up, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Ummm.... They raided a park full of protesters where, as we see, no one is without a smart phone or other recording device just in case they stumble upon the magic shot to sell to the tabloid journalists.

Might it be equally possible here that NYPD pushed ALL media back so they didn't wind up busting one of their heads purely by accident this time?? The media, even amateur ones, seem to have a thing for getting IN FRONT of Riot Police deployed to move..and doing it WHILE they are moving and DURING a raid. It's only a matter of time before an MSM reporter goes to the hospital over their lack of situation awareness or plain old common sense.

I can't really blame NYPD for this move. If censorship is what they were after, they would have actually put the electronic whammy to everyone's devices before a single cop entered the park. A lot are already blaming them for using "EMP" devices. I assure everyone, this hasn't been done and the mere suggestion in lower Manhattan of all places is sheer lunacy. However, that or physical confiscation of every recording device on protesters WOULD have been part of this had censorship been the goal.

We have never seen REAL censorship in the OWS movement. Pray to whatever we each believe that we never do. That WILL be the beginning of the end for our Republic.

Some folks need to stop working SO HARD to find ulterior motives when the obvious ones are perfectly sufficient to explain everything we see in a situation, IMHO.

Does that mean you also agree with City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez being detained for rushing to the scene and getting a gash on his forehead from the police?

I know there are a lot of people going for publicity and lying for their cause but there are many high profile people including a judge who was in attendance with her son who have seen this. I'm not saying it happened because all these people said it, but surely it can't be that difficult to believe that the NYPD were turning away the press considering everything else they have done recently.

That's just my take on it at least.

If they weren't doing anything wrong then they wouldn't hide their actions.

What a bunch of cowards.

They sure have had a lot of negative publicity lately, more than usual even.

I would have imagined that they would want to work on their image.

They sure seem to have a lot of "bad apples" who are just following orders.

Not surprising news, they obviously didn't want records of their Nazi-esque oppression tactics:

NYPD throw out over 5000 books at OWS tent library

This is a tough call for me because im an american and i firmly believe in free speech and the right to protest however I feel that this movement has lost steam because of a lack of command and control, I dont agree with the way the protesters lived in poor conditions and acted like slobs, trashing the park.If we want to take a stand we have to do this the right way and not let the NYPD or any other law enforcement agency find ways to remove the occupiers and they did just that and found the reasons to evict them. I hope this movement gains steam again and the people know what it is they are protesting.

Everything that was taken during the eviction is being held in a parking garage nearby and owners can claim their items at said garage.

This was in the same news report where the reporter was filmed being escorted from the area, for his safety and then being told to get off the street because he was blocking traffic. The reporter than told the cops that the street was closed, by them, to all cars so it shouldn't be an issue if he stands in the street.

Aside from the creepiness of the chanting, and as much as I am against the OWS movement, I do have serious problems with how a credentialed member of the press was handled here.

Attempting to hide something from the press or even the appearance that they were looks worse than anything that could have happened here.

IMO

The moment the councilman crossed the police lines during an ongoing police action, he became a police problem. On the OUTSIDE, he could have done something as a Councilman. Maybe.... He certainly could have done something the following day which would certainly have proven more productive than sitting in a cell killing time with his OWS compatriots. So.... Sorry, no. I don't have any more sympathy for an elected officer holder than I would a lowly sex offender hiding in the camp to avoid unwanted attention. They both became part of the problem that evening, not the solution.

In fact...'rushing down' and deliberately going INTO a police raid as a problem to the police makes him worse. The people caught inside the park by surprise can at least claim pure shocked innocence in doing the wrong things which may have gotten them arrested or hurt. This clown actually CHOSE to join them. As an Office Holder and elected community leader, that isn't honorable it's irresponsible. He wouldn't get a re-elect vote out of me and I have no idea what his personal politics even are.

after seeing the video is it not amazing that FREEDOM OF THE PRESS denied.freedom to use a public park that we the almighty TAX PAYER paid for out of our taxes denied. FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION denied.THE RIGHT OF THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH DENIED.
if this keeps up i can for see in the near future a revolution coming in most countries. and we have already seen the news footage out of Greece, where the neo nazi police forces are called in to subdue the masses who have every right to be pissed off beyond beyond belief.
considering that every GOVERNMENT has blown cash that they do not have ,these mental midgets don`t seem to understand the banking system nor do they seem to know anything about the cost of borrowing especially since they don`t have any way or means to pay it back,Greece ,the us and so on are all guilty of this .
i believe they as governments should all be charged with TREASON. for selling out our nations and the people of the world to the banks -the root of all evil .
it should be interesting about dec 25 2012 when the banks own everything and we the people are all living on the streets as the only way our brain dead GOVERNMENTS HAVE TO PAY THESE BILLS IS [1] RAISING TAXES THROUGH THE ROOF [2] DECLARING BANKRUPTCY [3] TAKING ABSOLUTE CONTROL OF THE THE BANKS AND OUTLAWING COMPOUND INTEREST . and forcing the worlds banks to rewrite every loan in the world ASAP at a flat rate of 5 or 10%.as we the people and governments cannot be owned as slavery went out a long time ago.
give us justice or pay the price as freedom no longer exists in this world due to the self serving madmen who seem to think that this world is theirs and theirs alone, the rich are only 1% if that the other 99% are pissed.

the worst part of all this is we the people pay for
[1] those damn useless politicians
[2] the police
[3] the military
[4] all of their secret police forces -ciss,fema ,cia and so on.and these are the fools whom they will unleash on us -the people, with a fury and vengeance unknown ,ops, kent state was only a test for what they could all get away with -murder of it`s unarmed citizens . all for what ever imaginary reason that they wish to come up with .remember to serve and protect -[not the people ] but CORPORATE GREED AND MINDLESSNESS.because you all sure as hell do not protect us you seem to have banded together under the disguise of serving the people ,liars.
it would seem that they all have forgotten who they work for .
we the people ,the tax payers.

Why Occupy Wall Street needs Michael Bloomberg

Keith Olbermann Special Comment www.informationclearinghouse.info...

In a Special Comment, Keith contextualizes Mayor Bloomberg’s actions against Occupy Wall Street at Zuccotti Park and how they have – unintentionally – vaulted the movement from a local nuisance to a global platform for the disenfranchised.

Keith has a very good rant on this ....peace

I have a feeling if this were to happen in your town you would gladly assist the police with rounding up the citizens. The Nazis needed people like you to help with their cause. I only make this observation due to you repeating the same stance on this in all the OWS threads.

Normally I would apologize, but I'm being completely truthful so there are no regrets on my behalf.

Take care.

I still can't get over the fact you compared the protesters to sex offenders.

That's pathetic.
