Looks like an X2 so far...

www.swpc.noaa.gov...

Been bouncing around for a few days now so we might expect more.

No alarm...just a note.

Peace

The only thing that a solar flare has done that I have noticed in my 40 yrs is mess up my tv service. I don't even think that we will ever see a flare that takes out the grid like the doomsayers think. I hope not anyway

The Solar Storms / CME's in our recent history already have taken out the grid...several times. That isn't even a question, since it's not what I'd call uncommon as an effect we've experienced. The question is, do we see another on the 1859 level that would turn localized or regional blackouts into a full global and systemic event? I agree in hoping we don't see that strength of storm in our lifetimes.

Recent history and descriptions of Solar/CME events back to 1859

But, the grid was alot smaller in comparison and newer in comparison then. So the scale would prove to be very different. I'm a believer that if the grid goes down globally, it wasn't because of a single sun flare. It is probably because someone of the 1% decided to create the illusion it was the solar flare. Controlled chaos, thats how the world "ends"

Yes we're at a 66% Chance..

Solar Flare Monitor:
spaceweather.inf.brad.ac.uk...

and the latest SOHO images:
sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov...

Looks like we're in for something.. perhaps more earth-quakes? It's a shame we can't tell WHERE they are going to happen.. but people are becoming pretty good at predicting them within a few days of solar activity.

Some pretty astonishing photos from SOHO.

So, is this the flare that change the trajectory of the asteroid YUxx?

Okay, I was just looking at the soho images again.. and if you look at them all...

What's with that dark streak? on the upper right-hand side... LASCO C2

and in LASCO C3 it causes an odd noise in the picture.

I'm not that familiar with these photos.

Whenever streaking occurs they use noise to mask it. It's common from my SOHO journeys.

Actually cooling down you mean.
Sunspots are colder regions on the solar corona.

The dark streak you see in many images is a sort of arm on the camera that's holding the disc that blocks out the sun.

Seeing as I can't upload a gif, here is a couple of links that show vids of the flare in H-a.

halpha.nso.edu...
halpha.nso.edu...

Im not sure how long the vids stay current for but you can clearly see the bright flash associated with the flare.
