Am i the only one to think that Phobos is anything but a natural moon? I've seen pics of it and it is a small, irregularly shaped object that seems so out of context when compared to Mars.

It screams artificial to me and i think it deserves a proper exploration.

No. You are not.

There have been quite a few people...

Start with Hoagland.

What exactly is strange about satellites attracted by Mars that are the size of those in the asteroid belt, probably pushed near Mars also with some object that pushed or crashed into an asteroid belt object making its pieces go near Mars and thus Phobos and Deimos? ..

We shouldn't have long to wait to find out

Russia Fuels Phobos-Grunt and sets Mars Launch for November 9
The Phobos-Grunt spacecraft is scheduled to blastoff on November 9, 2011 from Baikonur Cosmodrome
The probe will reach Mars orbit in 2012 and eventually land on Phobos and return the first ever soil samples back to Earth in 2014
www.universetoday.com...

Russian Phobos-Grunt spacecraft is set to launch to Mars on November 9, 2011

Phobos-Grunt will also have multiple cameras too .

IAS, in collaboration with LESIA, realised and delivered cameras and a visible microscope.
two panoramic cameras (located at the end of each arms of the probe),
two stereoscopic cameras,
one optical microscope (MicrOmega VIS).

I saw an interview with Buzz Aldrin where he was calling for an exploratory mission to look at the monolith on Phobos.

I guess not, many people have talked about that.

I've seen pics of it and it is a small, irregularly shaped object that seems so out of context when compared to Mars.
When compared to Mars, it is small and irregularly shaped, but small celestial objects (like asteroids) are not spherical or regularly shaped.

It screams artificial to me and i think it deserves a proper exploration.
Looking different doesn't automatically mean artificial. For something to look artificial it needs to show some attributes that do not exist in natural objects, so what do you see on Phobos that looks artificial?

It doesn't look artificial, so I think it's natural.

Roscosmos said that engineers have finished loading all the propellants into the Phobos-Grunt main propulsion module (cruise stage), Phobos lander and Earth return module at Facility 31 at Baikonur.
Russia Fuels Phobos-Grunt and sets Mars Launch for November 9

What propellants?! It looks like a HG Wells contraption designed to run from the steam of a boiling kettle.

You should get this badass in a thread of its own and make sure you put 2012 in the title. Don't be shy with the !!!! either.

Seriously, a story like this could be an ATS flag goldmine. What if Phobos is a dormant spaceship full of battle droids in stasis? The Russians are meddling with things they don't understand. Let's hope Phobos-Grunt can re-route power through its dilithium buffers and somehow warn the US President that trouble is on the way.

I hope that somewhere there's a divorced, alcoholic astronaut with nothing to lose and something to prove.

I don't know about you guys, but i'd like to think that something artificially made would be more symmetrical or even would have some distinct shapes rather than look like a battered potato. Just my opinion...

No. Phobos was not captured by Mars. At all. Scientists says.

Did the scientists said it that way or did they explained it a little more?

Apparently Phobos is destined to crash into Mars in a few million years due to it's deteriorating orbit. it's not the first time Russia has tried to visit Phobos either. I'm pretty sure just before the last probe was due to arrive all contact was lost with it. The Monolith is very interesting seems to have got Buzz Aldrin excited.

Aww dont make fun of the Russians they've had a tough time getting to mars. As far as I know they have yet to launch a truly successful mission to Mars
