Considoring QANTAS has the best air safety record in the world you'd think the management would realise it's the result of the people who work for QANTAS. You get what you pay for.

GIVE THEM WHAT THEY WANT! It's not much.

well that is questionable in recent times, even tho they havent crashed but theyve been in the news monthly for malfunctions and stuff ups.
exactly right its not much at all, and the board confirmed that its not much by giving upper managment pay rises. i thought basic business practice would have steered qantas decision makers away from this happening, but they go and make a huge deal out of it.. appearing on msm nightly, sending death threats.. to me this feels like they hit the self destruct button or something. maybe the know where the economy is heading and want to get out while the goings good.. remember they mostly lost future profits not money already made.

This ought to set occupy Sydney into an uproar.

Here Joyce has JUST given himself a FAT raise to $5 million annual, cut jobs, and asks the rest of the company to "tighten their belts..." This is a move to break the unions, and very deliberate at that. Quantas has a stellar reputation for safety and service, it's a shame...

I have to ask myself, what can ONE MAN DO that deserves 5 million dollars a year? I hate to sound like a socialist here, and I'M NOT, but seriously...this is DISGUSTING! it's not like he's done anything to make the financial situation any better for Quantas this past year. -40% stock slump this year and he get a FREAKIN RAISE!!!

An unbelievable read!

I agree with you but there's always a choice. Qantas CAN sack all their workers and re-employ with worker's contracts they don't strike. There are plenty of people in the industry outside of Australia that would be happy to work for Qantas with less wages. Unfortunately, thats the truth. Qantas was already in trouble once other airlines cut their prices. Won't last for long though.....oil prices will dramatically rise in the coming months.

I hope these workers stick it out but how long will the heat last once banks demand their mortgage payments from many of the workers?

This airline has the flight quality and safety standards. For that cooperation and dedication of employees is needed.IF management does not listen then employees will not adhere to the standards too. There will be maintainability issues and quality of services will fall.

The CEO must understand that dedication and cooperation of employees and management was a prerequisite for the quality of the airlines.Without it Qantas will fail and falter like other airlines.

Don't blame Joyce, blame the shareholders! They're the ones who agreed to it by a majority vote.

Ahhh, you are right there...WTF? IS it corporate suicide or something much sinister going on here...perhaps Joyce doesn't mind being the HATED AXE MAN...

I have to add this second line, it's the rules...

Well I only see two options really.

Either they have a cunning plan with all of this, or they are totally incompetent.

personally i do smell a rat, but im not saying anything 100%
they have clearly brought this on themselves, there would have been millions of easy ways to sort this out.

the company has lasted over a century; they are not incompetent. so id go with the first option.
basic business practice would have sorted this out, they knew what they were getting into and let it happen.

and one ceo would not have brought it down, he still has to take comands

it took one CEO and one CFO to bring down a company the size of Enron. it took one CEO to bring down TWA. CEO's have more power over there companies than presidents do over there countries.

theres always people behind the ceos and cfos.. and when they go down a lot of the time there is always an agenda.
the smartest people in the room always go free when it comes to big corps like those.

Well the airline has been making losses and they have to do something about if. If part of the solution is workforce pay restraint and workforce restructuring then that is what needs to be done.

Whining on about the pay of the Qantas Chied Executive (a $5M AUD package) is a distraction. He could be paid twice as much but that does not hide the fact that the airline is losing money hand over fist.

Sometimes the workforce just needs to understand reality.

The same type of industrial dispute has been going on with British Airways. I love to see very well paid people going on strike. They don't have my support!

Regards

I can't help but think you just might right there.

I know this might seem pretty outragous but why does Virgin Airways keep coming to mind? Can't quite put my finger on it but I will in afew hours......I just hope I'm wrong.

it does seem likely. and yes virgin will profit greatly from this.

another option is that the 'australian' qantas business model is outdated.. its sister company jetstar is much more modern and targeted to the customer of today. i think they wanted to drop it to be honest, and considering how much of an icon the flying roo is they couldnt just go out and say it without reason.

Hmmmmmm; how about pushing the prices of Qantas shares down for a takeover?

www.theaustralian.com.au...

I do know a number of key staff of Qantas moved over to Virgin Blue not long ago.

Richard Branson is up to something, I know it!

Every time I buy funny bunny things from over seas, the damn airports/customs/pilots go on strike.

It's a conspiracy.

3 weeks is a lot of stress..

Luckily this time it was a sneaky android tablet I managed to score out of china after refusing to give them 100% ratings. So all is not doomy..

but when it was... ahem.. well. lets just say I was not a happy jan!!

Unions and the like have their place.

Honestly, the issue of wages has always been an impasse - it's rather fruitless for a labor union to strike over wages. Honestly, I'd fire the lot of them and hire those willing and able to do the job. If that still doesn't resolve the issue - close down and auction off the company assets, build a nice little farming retreat, and let the rest of the world rot in hell.

Worker unions started over unsafe working conditions and unreasonable treatment/termination of employees by employers and the managers appointed by the employers. Bargaining for wages is an -individual- right and responsibility.

Anymore, though, I have given up on society. You just can't win for losing, anymore. God Forbid you make a profit off of anything without being labeled some kind of deviant. And as if that isn't awesome enough - if you do join a union and pay into union-sponsored retirement programs, the vast majority of them misuse and misappropriate funds - so your pension is a lie.

I just find it horribly ironic that the labor unions - who often demonize corporations (or any employer, for that matter)... are guilty of -worse- than any employer out there.

Richard Branson would just love that! Would save him buying up cheap Qantas shares at bargain basement prices!
