Not being American, its not clear to me why people register for a particular party.
Normally the idea for elections is that it is a secret vote, with your choice being secret.
Why the emphasis here on it being public knowledge?
Whats the story behind all this?
Do you HAVE to register?

There is no law that states you must register with any particular party, you can choose Independent. The reason a lot of people register with a specific party is to gain access to voting within the party primary. I suspect this OP posted how to register as a Republican so that more people could vote for Ron Paul in the primary. If you are not registered as a Republican you cannot vote in the Republican primaries but anyone registered to vote regardless of party or non-party registration can vote in the general election.

GOP and the DNC are both flawed.
Independent says it all!
An Independent can choose from any Party.
Thus, tossing out the garbage inherent in both, and retaining the good.

The reason their is so much garbage is because you have to take money from garbage just

i'm not going to register as anything...it's not like it's anybody's business...my vote is based on whether I support the idea's and policies a candidate possesses...nothing more...

hence why I didn't vote in 2008...i mean Obama or McCain? ugh...

Yes, (technically) you do have to register in order to vote.

In the past, at least in my state, you had to be registered within the party to vote in their primary. Now you can register "un-enrolled" and vote in any parties primary, as that title allows you to choose whichever parties ballot you wish to vote on. To the best of my knowledge only the "State of New Hampshire", the "Commonwealth of Massachusetts" and "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" have this system. There are a few states that also have what is called an open primary, which is basically the same concept. Registered Independents cannot, in most cases, vote outside of Independent in primaries.

So to answer your question, most people are registered as one party or another simply to be able to vote in the primary races.

I registered as a Republican last week.

This is solely to allow me to vote in the primary elections.

During the real elections when everyone can vote, I can vote for democrat & republican alike. So really registering is only beneficial if you are going to vote in the primaries.

Hmmm, I don't remember EVER being asked what party I was registered with at the polls. In fact there isn't even a place to indicate party affiliation on the registration form in Montana. I go to the polls and the nominees from all parties are on the ballot.

Maybe I'm just missing something, but registering for a particular party seems like invasion of privacy to me....
