You might be right about perspective. When someone visits a city, they do all the touristy stuff and hit all the hotspots, but when one lives in a town, they tend to avoid all the touristy hotspots. There are probably dozens of neat things in this town I have never considered going to do.

We should all make it a point to visit the parts of our town that a tourist would want to visit. Kind of missing the forest for the trees.

In my opinion.....

We could lower our violent and overall crime rate by legalizing prostitution (or at least stop swatting it down so quickly), allowing strip clubs, and shrinking the size of our police forces in this town. We would combat the affects of the “young males” at the Universities by allowing them some outlets for their natural urges, we would free up more police force to investigate more serious crimes, and we would save much needed budget money!!

the dutch are moving away from this model, they will be outlawing drug tourism soon and there are many illegal hookers working around the corner from the red light district. amsterdam is not a utopia, there are all the usual crimes there

My friends in the Netherlands have said all the crime and problems stem from tourism, not locals. The "drug tourism" is the problem, not necessarily the drugs.

It depends on the crime. Data can be construed.

For example, my all time favorite city, Baltimore, Charm City and the most beautiful city in the US, ranks fourth for murder but first for violent crime.

www.cnn.com...

but it really depends on who is compiling the data.

As someone pointed out in a thread on this earlier, that Federal Data may not necessarily match local data.

www.abovetopsecret.com...

See Baltimore made 8th on the list.

Now I find your statement interesting, because Tallahassee is a liveable place.

However, Baltimore is not.

My final thought on it? If a city sucks, it just sucks. No matter the statistics.

If your town is still healthy, that is good news.It may have a lot of crime but at least it is being contained.

I often say that no one takes advantage of the area they lived in.

When I lived in Arizona, we did something every other weekend. My boss commented that I had seen more of the state then anyone else.

it was amazing how many locals never went to the Grand Canyon.

but then I thought about it, I didnt see the Lincoln Memorial for the first time until two years ago, and I have never been up the Washington Monument, or seen the Jefferson Memorial.

The only exception is the Smithsonians, because they are cool...and free and serve great food.

But I don't know why people do this. They only visit local attractions if they have to take someone to see them. Too touristy perhaps?

That is the thing that bugs me a little.

I have been in places in Dallas, St. Louis, Memphis, Miami, Atlanta that were very scare. I have been warned away from certain places in New Orleans. I've been places in Miami and L.A. where I had to be "escorted" by a local or I might not have been safe.

Tallahassee doesn't have anything like that? There is no place in this town I wouldn't take my wife at any hour of the day or night. The roughest bars and roughest neighborhoods are still very safe unless you happen to be trying to buy drugs, LOL!

I think all the "date rapes" from the Universities, and all of the armed robberies of drunk kids walking home from the bars skew the numbers. On that same note though, I know probably only about 1 in 4 rapes actually get reported, so is that particular problem really so rampant?

I was discussing this with my wife, and she relayed a story from college where she was certainly raped, but she didn't do anything about it. Passed out alone in a room, woke up in the middle of someone she kind of knew having their way with her. She also told me all of her friends have similar stories? Are crimes against women so rampant that the women just expect it? I honestly have a big problem with the date rape scenario where "she wants it, she doesn't want it, maybe just a little, no stop, etc." BUT, I think if someone is alone in a room, and somebody else just walks in and takes advantage of their body, this is clear rape, not date rape, just plain rape! It shocks me that the women I know take this for granted and shrug it off?

This sort of thing happens quite frequently, and yes it has happened to me.

Problem is, that any woman who accusses someone of rape has their character slashed to bits. And basically your gonna lose if you drink in public.

its a no win situation.

Look at what happens on ATS. We can even run an experiment. If a female were to say: I got drunk at a party and passed out, and a man took full advantage of me,what would be the first words out of everyone's mouth?

High crime rates are mostly areas that lack law enforcement that are in driving distance of a large metro area.

Oddly enough, this town isn't within driving distance to any "urban" area. Tallahassee is the largest city within 3 hours of here. There are a lot of little country towns surrounding Tallahassee, but Tallahassee is not very big itself. There are not any bad neighborhoods. There are poor neighborhoods, and there is more crime in certain areas, but those areas are not "dangerous." A good friend of mine lives smack dab in the middle of the worst part of town, and none of us give it a second thought when coming or going from his house, even at night. My wife is a little 95 lb, cute, white lady, and she can pull up to his house at midnight, stand outside and smoke, talk on the phone, or whatever. She isn't going to be accosted by a criminal. Someone did break in and steal his TV a couple of months ago during the middle of a weekday while he was at work. They didn't steal his football rings, or his guns, or the cash on his dresser, just the TV?

Anyhow, I agree with you, but it still doesn't make sense how this town ranks up there? But, at the same time, we have had several brutal murders lately, and I knew some of the victims, but they were all murdered by associates of theirs, not strangers. They were all domestic types of crimes, and none were drug or gang or burglary related.

How does a community combat that type of crime?

We're an hour from the largest "metro" area. But we also have a sizeable police force, plus as the county seat we have the Sheriff's Dept. here. We also are a National Park (or portions of the city are) so there are ton's of "tree cops", as well as a State Trooper troop hq, a federal building housing an unknown amount of U.S. Marshals and other federal personnel.

On a lighter note, the cities voters did just approve funding for a new 500 bed jail that can be expanded to hold 700+.

I stand by my claim that, at least here, the crime is fueled by drug problems and high rate of poverty. No amount of police or other law enforcement can change those facts, just attempt to deter/fight the results.
