IRBIL, Iraq: At least two Iranian Kurdish rebels and one member of Tehran’s elite Revolutionary Guards were killed during clashes along the Islamic Republic’s border with Iraq, the two sides said Sunday.

“Since midnight (2100 GMT Saturday), heavy battles have been ongoing between PJAK and the Iranian army, resulting in injuries among elements of our group,” rebel spokesman Sherzad Kamankar told AFP.

The article also says there are other reports saying Iran has suffered more casualties, and other reports say the rebels have suffered more casualties, but neither are confirmed yet.

There has been fighting in the past, but the latest battle seems to be an escalation, according to the article.

Iran routinely shells border districts of the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, targeting PJAK bases. On July 7 Iran bombarded Haj Omran.

The shelling came despite a warning on July 3 by the president of Iraqi Kurdistan, Massud Barzani, over the cross-border operations.

If this escalates further, what will happen?

If Iran has half a brain they won't mess with the Peshmerga. Even Saddam did it from a distance- for a reason.

The Simco Peshmerga are born guerrilla fighters and some of the best light infantry in the region. They will utterly screw up the flow of your day if you cross them.

That being said they are some of the coolest people on the planet and downtown Irbil and Dahouk simply rock- especially the Christian sections where there are bars and nightclubs.

Not gonna get into Kurdish women... wow...
