oh really?

if GMO crops were such a huge success, wouldn't we hear about them everyday? they would at least include such data in their ad campaigns, obviously, so there is reason to look a little deeper.

i'll give you two links to older threads / posts just in case someone actually believes that superficially innocent tune of yours...

maybe someone will actually search independently, i mean it's the best way to reach a balanced view.

Of course not. I said I hate Monsanto. I'm just pointing out (please don't say 'shame on you'...I'm a farmer and we HATE THEIR PATENTS) how easy it is to lose sight of what is going on (the good of gmo crops being gone) in the grande scheme of things (private property, i.e., the Hungarian farmers). I'm not saying what they did was RIGHT...I'm just saying that it is ironic that on ATS, of all places, people are cheering for government control of private crops...seems strange to me. Do you understand?

It is a little ironic perhaps....except that in this particular case, the government there, is doing what they are supposed to do, which is keep a few lawbreakers from affecting the much larger majority of non-law-breakers safe from the cross pollination of their legal crops. They didn't ruin or confiscate the land. They plowed it under, from my reading.

I have no idea if the laws against it were passed with or against the wishes of the general population. But, there is a difference between governmental oppression and performing the function of monitoring the laws and enforcing them. Conflating that difference is one of the things oppressors of all stripes try to do. Anyway....just sayin'

Wow this is awesome. Good for them! I think that Monsanto's days are officially numbered. With all of the controversy and finally the retaliation of not only those Indian farmers but of governments such as Hungary, it's only a matter of time before they crumble. Finally!

Do not bet on that.

Monsanto has a major say in the World Trade Organization and WON the lawsuit against the European Union on the subject of GMOs.

I do not support Monsanto nor am a proponent of GM food, but this is just ridiculous. True, the pollination could travel and breed with heirloom or pure stock, but destroying it is, in a way, foolish, unless it is A) only to prevent said cross-pollination or B) to eradicate crop grown strictly for seed, which we do not know.

If a farmer unknowingly plants a GM crop and it is destroyed, he is out money, and even though it might not be pure, or if it is bad," the fact that crop that could be used to feed is now gone is equally troubling.

If GM is banned, ensure pure seed is available or institute checks on the importation/buying of seed.

The eradication of a crop simply because the seed from which it comes is "oulawed" hurts the farmers and whoever would be potentially buying the food, ESPECIALLY is the food is needed (and do not quote hungry people refusing GM crop).

Let's burn down the building to kill the bugs.

Reminds me of burning/destroying marijuana fields. Just because it is "illegal" the need to destroy or eradicate seems to be justified.

Just another perspective. Unless, of course, the goal is to eradicate it by all means necessary, seed, crop, etc.

DESTROY!!

"True, the pollination could travel and breed with heirloom or pure stock, but destroying it is, in a way, foolish, unless it is A) only to prevent said cross-pollination or B) to eradicate crop grown strictly for seed, which we do not know." Do you know how corn pollinates? The polllen is high at the top in large amounts - and since corn is male-female, female plants way down and way later can get contaminated. What is more, these pollinating wreaths can stay long after the plant is pollinated and growing corn.
Obviously this is to be prevented, even if the measures seem drastic at first reading.
How do you react to a bunch of radioactive clothing just out of a Fukushima visit?
Burn them in a safe container and bury the ashes in a sealed lead-shielded box. No? Or give them to Salvation Army?

The US no longer funds its military retirements....Ronald Reagan created a "Fund" where money was put and invested around the world to turn a profit to be able to pay the US military their retirements..

Monsanto is just one of many of those investments. They WILL turn a profit. They don't care if they have to starve/kill millions to get those profits. They've got tools to keep turning a profit you can't even comprehend.

I am glad you illuminated the background of this conflict. So it ties directly to the war machine or world police force of the United States backed by China at this point (for cheap oil) and Audi Arabia (for expensive oil)
The point is, the energy lobby wants to instill a New World Order. And resistance must come from grassroots. OK, I cannot afoord now not to buy gas - fine, at least I support the tearing down of their superstructure.

Ok this is the most stupid thing ive ever heard, for starters i have no sympathy for a farmer who puts his wealth before others health, on top of that how on earth does a farmer unknowingly plant GM crop they obv know where they buy there products from and who and should really do there research before they go buying any crops, also GM crops require different handling than other crops.

And yes burning the GMO crops is the only way to get our point across and i love that people are standing up for there human rights, we do not need GM never did never will, the only reason people buy it is because they have no choice or they couldnt care less about there health or doing there research.

sorry, but you are wrong. You must not own any land, because if you did, you would feel differently. Not trying to be rude, just real. There is a difference between 'thinking about growing food' and actually doing it. It is not as simple as you think. We don't just tiptoe out singing songs to plant seeds in the ground. There is much human labor involved...and thought, and love, and hope and all things entwined. So, yes, it is private.

IF any of you are truly passionate about the outrage against GMO seeds and Monsanto like corporations, then you need to do just a little searching on your own. Go look and see when this all started happening and see how the American farmer was cajoled and bought and then stuck into a government subsidized system where his/her colleagues all do the same and there is no farming without playing the sick rules. A farming prison, as it were. Do you not think that all farmers would love to farm organically and simply if it could pay their bills? Do you realize that the American farm is in danger of extinction? Do you realize that no children want to farm anymore, very few, very few. Do you see crumbling barns around you? Do you see people building them (save for the Amish)? Think and read and try to find a solution. Don't kill what's left of American farmers. Please. please. please.

Speaking as a socialist, I see no problem in this. Even if I were a hardcore capitalist, I wouldn't have a problem.

These GMO plants spread pollen by wind; they can thus "infect" others' fields. And since most of Monsantos' GMO products require Monsanto's copyright chemicals to germinate, this means that these fields of GMO corn have very real potential to destroy everyone else's cornfields.

Look at it as the government protecting hte property of others by ending a form of vandalism, if that makes it go down more smoothly.

I agree with making the GMO seeds being outlawed. They should of never existed to begin with.

That aside, even if they didn't destroy farmers crops, the food was infected to begin with. Sure farmers lost out on the crop, maybe some knew the risk, maybe some didn't. End story short its good to see anyone fighting against the poisoned seeds and bio-engineered food. The farmers should get some funds back if they were unaware of having GMO seeds, if they were aware and broke their countries laws then why should deal with it or move.

As for other counties adopting this law, it would be amazing.

Thanks for the info, cheers.

UPDATE:
Monsanto appeals against destruction of corn. Claims crop is not GMO

The Hungarian unit of US seed giant Monsanto has appealed to Budapest Municipal Court to suspend a resolution by the Agriculture Office ordering the destruction of corn thought to be genetically modified, Monsanto Hungaria technical director Mihály Czepó told state news agency MTI on Monday.

According to Monsanto’s understanding of Hungarian law, the corn cannot be destroyed until the court either upholds or dismisses its appeal. A ruling could be expected this week, lawyers at the company said.

Legislation signed into law in March requires that corn to be tested for genetically modified organisms (GMO) before it goes on sale. Last week authorities destroyed 400 hectares of corn it said was GMO-infected in the counties of Baranya, Fejér, Hajdú-Bihar and Szolnok. The seeds in Baranya were bought from Monsanto’s Romanian subsidiary.

The dispute is over 2,500 hectares in Gyõr-Sopron, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Tolna, Fejér, Pest and Baranya counties. The ministry contends that farmers sowed GMO-infected corn seeds they purchased from Monsanto.

Czepó said the aim is to spare farmers unnecessary problems. He said that if the seeds are destroyed and Monsanto is awarded damages to be paid by the farmers, it could amount to billions of forints.

Strangely, no word on how many and how much the political corruption kickbacks will be...

I guess we should have know Monsanto wouldn't let this interfere with their global domination.

I will keep all posted with updates as they become available.

Thanks for your great posts and help spreading this information.

Warmest Regards,

This is some incredible info you have provided us with " I love bigfoot"
I tip my hat to you.

It should be interesting to see if Hungary becomes the latest to experience finanicial crisis, assanations, earthquakes, flooding, etc.

If so, it will be a field day for the real conspiracy theroists.

But, it will be interesting to watch the next 30 days to see if any events unfold.

Again, thanks for the great thread. S&F

Yeah do you know what I heard.
Seeds from GMO plants do not germinate.
Do Not Germinate.
Thats what I heard and the impact is .. well you figure it out.
Also how do you digest food that lost the power of life.
You might not be getting the nutrition you seek from God given plants and seeds.
Don't mess with mother nature.
Power from the environment is all we need.

Hungarian government doesn't care about its "people", they've now made forced labor (slavery) official once again, so now the poor and the unemployed will be forced to work for peanuts, for some ultra-rich from West Europe, or now China. Since Hungary is an extremely racist place, gypsies and immigrants will be forced into this, just like in Nazi Germany's "labor" camps. Progress? not really.

But there are other people who resist Monsanto BY THEMSELVES in many places in the world already, how come it's news when a government does it. And btw Germany has already banned Monsanto.

Im a Hungarian and a farmer, and im deeply offended by how un-informed and retarded you are. Where did you get your information? From the liberal-socialist party that has turned a peaceful protest into a violent street-battle in 2006? The ones responsible for the national debt to rise to 3 times its original amount in just 8 years? The people who scammed the citizens into private retirement funds and have stolen their money? They shot people in the face with rubber bullets, and used live ammunition and rifle-grenades to spread fear and terror during the protests. They arrested people just for standing on the street and tortured them in police department basements. I was here in Hungary at that time and i know what im talking about. The police brutality reminded me of the soviet era. You sir have no idea what you are talking about. The "forced labor" you talk about is basically a "work 4 hours a day for welfare" program. We, the working people of hungary are sick and tired of paying for the gypsys who dont work and make up 90% of criminals in our country. I pay my taxes and i see my money go straight to criminal organizations THRIVING in my country. Dont believe everything the media tells you, especially about my country... This program had a positive feedback from the "slaves" themselves as you call them. They dont have to work too much, basically they take care of public property (parks, streets etc.) and they get money for it, and the right to get on a welfare list. This is actually progress. We dont like to pay heaps of cash for people who dont work and turn around and rob you in the middle of the street. They developed a "welfare lifestyle" where they are proud to be lowlifer unemployed criminals, and they laugh at people working their asses off and still can barely pay their bills. The gypsy mafia is so strong that they can assassinate whoever they want in broad daylight, and the liberal media is helping them in creating a "poor unemployed, opressed gypsy" image. Do your own research. You need to come to my country and see for yourself before jumping on the bandwagon of liberal media hype.

On topic: The GMO seeds that were smuggled into the country through Romania were sold to unsuspecting farmers as bio-seeds. The farmers have been compensated for their loss by the government (well, mostly, since its not easy to calculate expenses on different types of soil and plants when it comes to an all-together compensation). It was just a small amount of fields infected by the GMO crop, and it did no major harm in the overall production of our agriculture - thank God....
