No one has said the Russians are gong to 'invade' Canada.

Clearly this is most likely about mineral rights in the Arcitc.

Oh for the love of God. Just because Russia moves some troops to the Arctic its all bad news. But if the entire Canadian army were to be deployed to Arctic circle, none would give a damn. Infact it would probably be to defend "the free world" against the Russian invaders.
Aren't we allowed to have a military presence in the Arctic, even though we have the largest part of it?
More importantly what can anyone do against it? Nothing of importance. Throw insults at Russians and make biased preconceptions.

Serdyukov was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying Friday the brigades could be based in Murmansk, Arkhangelsk or other areas.
.

Given that the USSR used to have enough troops to plan to invade Norway through the Arctic this seems like a decrease in forces!!

I mean seriously - 2 brigades - maybe 8,000 men total.......in Archangel and Murmansk.........which are major russian Naval bases so already full of troops and sailors.........and this is somehow an escalation??

It's also oldish news - report from April 2011

NATO also regularly exercises in the Arctic - 2000 British troops on Arctic exercise, and holds quite regular Cold Response exercises in northern Norway with up to 10k troops. Canada announced the creation of a new Arctic battalion in 2009.

Canada and Russia have quite good relations. I don't think many people realize that.
We both have troops up there, it's just good practice with so many resources, and the ice melting means more traffic through the Northern Route.

Apparently we're getting some new toys. Big blimps. It'll help our northern population, it'll build our presence up there, both in population and business. We'd have more people up there, I'm sure, if food and supplies weren't so hard to get up there, making it very expensive to live there.

And a rather condescending article out of a magazine from the US mention new snowmobiles. Those that haven't dealt with extreme cold temperatures, year around, shouldn't mock the use of good snowmobiles
