the E.U. is, as you pointed out, a bit of a united states of europe (conceptually)...about time, its not like the past thousand or so years of them being with no connection was a wonderful result...

Hitler had lots of ideas...some were total crap, some were good. a europe working together for some common good and goal seems idealistically a good thing, don'tcha think?

down the line, the states and europe may work out greater trade and perhaps unite together in some new union...this is the progression of civilization, growing larger and stronger through peace and trade until we hit a type 1 civilization and finally learn how to work together verses bomb each other...

They did some really good things...animal cruelty laws, butchering policys, standard of living (welfare), etc...however, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Whilst I'm not a huge fan of the single currency, the idea of a democratic federation of European nations is a wonderful idea. Look at our history, constantly fighting, the EU offers us the opportunity to have a future of constant cooperation, both economically and culturally. I love the fact that I can freely travel across Europe and experience it's wide variety of cultures and landscapes. Isolation is our biggest enemy.

No doubt the EU in it's current model needs some reform to enable it to be more inclusive and less restrictive of individual member states, but remember it's extremely young, democracy isn't built overnight. There may come a time when the EU in it's current form needs to be completely done away with and we may have to start from scratch, but hopefully the outcome will be a free, democratic and prosperous continent of individual nations with a shared identity as Europeans, a shared principle of freedom and a shared passion for democracy.

The biggest fear I see a european can have over a united europe is a loss of individuality and culture.
Won't happen overnight, however, with more and more integration, the true flavor of each country may start to dull down with open borders and a single currency...

I guess its 6 of one, half dozen of the other...best to go with the version that requires less tombstones made.

It wasn't about, Uniting Europe, it was about 'Breathing Space' for Greater Germany as the Nazis called and they spun it has 'Protecting' Aryans. Hitler was a huge admirer of the British Empire and wanted the same thing for Nazi Germany, he didn't want unite Europe, he wanted to conquer and control it to fit with his warped ideology. :-)

That's a fair point, but bare in mind, culture is constantly changing, especially in the modern era when such a free and instant transmission of knowledge is possible. For example the culture of England today is very different from how it was 100 years ago and it was different in the 70's from how it is today etc so the idea that cultures die isn't entirely true, more that they evolve based on varying degrees of human interaction. The progression and evolution of culture is exactly how humanity has developed for centuries and is the reason humanity developed at all. If eastern mathematics hadn't have been introduced to the west there may not have been a rennaisance which is heralded by many to have been the beginning of western domination in the fields of science and medicine etc.

To shut ourselves off and be hostile to cooperation based upon some sense of emotional attachment to slight cultural differences would be a disaster at a point in human history when we are developing faster than ever before.
