You know... ``to protect the children`` or something.

The Great Firewall of Europe

"The Presidency of the EU's Law Enforcement Working Party wants to create [PDF] 'a single secure European cyberspace with a certain "virtual Schengen border" and "virtual access points" whereby the Internet Service Providers (ISP) would block illicit contents on the basis of the EU "black-list."' Leaving aside the fact that this won't work for lots of reasons, how seriously can you take anyone talking about 'cyberspace' in 2011?"

Hopefully they don't get their way. Freaking fascists. LEAVE INTERNET ALONE. LEAVE IT FREE.

Of course they wont. Information is dangerous when you are trying to control the world.

Well the laws about what is and isn't legal are so different in different European countries I can't see how they would remotely make it work. Unless they want to upgrade us all to Dutch laws, that would be OK

There have apparently been some problems in the USA with pornography offences crossing state borders, where some material may be legal in one state's jurisdiction, yet, it may be illegal a few miles away, in a neighbouring state.

The idea here, appears to be a desire to legally standardise and unify what material is, or isn't, permissible throughout the EU, as a whole, rather than having 27 different countries defining a variety of differing and conflicting legislation regarding this issue.

While some may interpret this story to be an attempt by the EU to censor the internet, I think that the main point of this is about whether the EU, as an entity, should control the laws - such as internet regulations - of independent countries.
