Patient Dies in Pfizer Drug Study

Patient Dies in Pfizer Drug Study
April 25, 2011

Pfizer Inc. confirmed that one patient who was taking its drug candidate tofacitinib, a pill designed to treat rheumatoid arthritis, died during a recent clinical trial and says the death was connected to the drug....

Earlier this month Pfizer said the drug met its goals in a separate late-stage trial.

Pfizer said the other deaths included a patient who died of acute heart failure, one death caused by brain injury following trauma, and one case of worsening rheumatoid arthritis. The brain injury death occurred 22 days after the patient stopped taking tofacitinib, and the patient who died of worsening rheumatoid arthritis had stopped taking tofacitinib six weeks earlier.

So I wonder how much these people who have the diseases get paid by these money hungry corporations? Really, this is no different from biological experiments on POW's except nowadays the incentive to have people 'volunteer' their bodies for experiments involve money incentives...because we all know people will respond to incentives to try something.

But you also have to realize that privacy in these studies is also an issue. This quote in the article really has me wondering how many more people have died in Pfizer "reaching its goals". What goals???? Death toll?

More than 1,000 patients have taken tofacitinib during clinical trials, and Pfizer said that overall death rate for patients in those studies is similar to what has been observed in other biologic treatments for rheumatoid arthritis.

What is similar? Other biological treatments?

So, the treatment is called a drug. Or conversely, this is Orwell talk for poison. The treatment is poison.

If you research drug studies you always see two things in them: the patient either was treated successfully, or they died. So they always look at death. In statistics terms, if there is an acceptable death rate when taking drugs, this means that corporations don't even get a slap on the hand for this. Have you heard of any lawsuits against these drug companies? No, because in signing a contract with the corporations you are waiving your right to sue them.

The TGN1412 drug developed by German firm Te Genero caused some serious problems too.

This has me concerned for the health and safety of North Americans. Today, people look at drugs in terms of wellness. In other words, it becomes a placebo effect to make us feel better, when we all know there are other alternatives to us we can use to treat illnesses and other 'curable' diseases.

Unfortunately, when you take drugs (ie. medication, ie. poison), you are taking a risk of harming yourself in other ways. For example, I found this article from a Canadian source that talks about this exact thing.

Facts on Prescription Drug Deaths and the Drug Industry

Prescription drugs taken as prescribed in hospitals are the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S and Canada, after cancer, heart disease and strokes. They cause about 10,000 deaths a year in Canada and about 106,000 deaths a year and over two million serious injuries in the U.S. (Source: Lazarou et al JAMA Vol. 279 No. 15 pp.1200-1205 Incidence of Adverse Drug Reactions in Hospitalized Patients)

As many as another 10,000 deaths a year in Canada are thought to occur outside hospitals due to the wrong drug, dosage errors, and adverse reactions. (Source: Dr. Joel Lexchin, Associate Professor, School of Health Policy and Management, York University, Emergency Physician, University Health Network, and Associate Professor, Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ont.)

One out of four admissions to internal medicine in Canadian hospitals is related to prescription drugs, 70% of which are preventable. (Source: Drug Related Hospitalizations in a Tertiary Care Internal medicine Service of a Canadian Hospital: A Prospective Study Leslie Jo Samoy et al. Pharmacotherapy 2006:26 (II) 1587-1586)

Sixteen major drugs have been pulled off the North American market since 1997 for injuring or killing patients including the drug that killed Vanessa Young – Prepulsid. Vioxx alone may have killed 55,000 – 65,000 patients before being withdrawn by the manufacturer - Merck in 2004.

Over-the-counter drugs also cause many deaths. For example, every year over 15,000 patients die in North America from ordinary aspirin and Ibuprophen. Ordinary Tylenol is the cause of thousands of hospital admissions and hundreds of deaths annually in North America.
Safety Warnings are Grossly Inadequate

If you can't read the safety stuff on the labels, no fear you are not alone...even doctors can't read this crap because it was written by lawyers!

Patient information leaflets are dangerous because they create a false sense of security, listing only minor adverse reactions. Drug labels are 30-50 pages of fine print, written by lawyers. Very few doctors ever read them. Those who do are often confused. Instead they get their drug information from commissioned ‘detail reps’ who exaggerate the effectiveness of the drugs, and play down the risks.

Now this is the kicker why drug deaths can be linked to funding medical schools for 'continued research'

Most doctors get the rest of their drug information at “Continuing Medical Education” conferences or meetings held at expensive restaurants, resorts, or on exotic trips sponsored by the drug companies. After a Saturday morning slide show extolling the virtues of the new drug, everyone heads out for the ski slopes or to the beach for two days. The drug’s sales rise exponentially in the following months based on debts of gratitude, not proven therapy.

Most Doctors Feel Continual Debts of Gratitude to Pharmaceutical Companies

Beginning in medical schools our doctors are taught that they are entitled to free meals and gifts from the big pharma companies. What starts out as coffee cups and pens, morphs into expensive dinners, tickets to sporting events and free trips to exotic locations, all under the guise of ‘continuing medical education’. The only way these debts of gratitude can be repaid is by putting new drugs still in Phase IV of testing into your bloodstream and organs.

So how much doctors make from selling patients to the corporations under obliviousness of their patient??? Sick money!

The big pharma companies spend upwards of $ 20,000. per doctor a year to create debts of gratitude. Doctors do not believe these gifts affect their prescribing habits; a drug reps’ dream.

Doctors in North America accept $ 4 billion/year in free samples of the newest a most expensive drugs, and use them to create debts of gratitude in their patients. Since most illnesses get better on their own, and the placebo effect works 30-70% of the time, the patients believe the samples worked, and begin buying them unnecessarily, sometimes for life.

Specialists are paid up to $ 20,000. per patient to enroll patients in drugs trials out of their offices. They have to mention that this is a trial, but are not required to tell the patients they are being paid to do so. A specialist can make up to $ 2 million on the side out of their office with 100 patients and never have to tell them they are being treated like a canary in a mine in exchange for money.

If a drug is sold on the market in phase 4 of testing, it is still a test/trial, and therefore patient do not give a consent to perform...such a marketing and misinfo scam

A drug considered ‘safe’ today, can be considered ‘not safe’ tomorrow if the drug company comes up with a new drug to replace a best seller. ‘Safe’ is an arbitrary standard set by drug companies and Health Canada based on what they have to sell. That leads to hundreds of injuries and deaths. No one tells the patients.

Drugs are proven ‘safe’ after four phases of testing. Phase Four is selling a new drug on the open market. Any patient taking a new drug is becoming part of a giant drug trial. No one ever tells the patients, so they can’t provide an informed consent.

Pharamaceutical companies are not required to report adverse reactions to their drugs using world wide totals, and so only report the injuries and deaths that occur in each jurisdiction, a much smaller number. Safety information is viewed as ‘commercial secrets’. This makes it impossible for regulators to determine how dangerous the drugs truly are.

The information Health Canada analyzes to review/approve new drugs is kept secret, preventing independent researchers from reviewing it or challenging it; the same information that is routinely published on the FDA web site.

Blaming the patient for THEIR response to the drug is always THEIR problem and never the DRUGS problem? Yeah right!

Drug companies take adverse drug reaction reports and manipulate the data before reporting them to their ‘partners’ at Health Canada, usually blaming the patient by assuming (often with no evidence) it was an overdose, the patient had a previously undiagnosed ‘condition’, or they were a “poor metabolizer”. They never conclude there is anything wrong with the drug itself. If they are unable to blame the patient, they simply change the label, which few doctors ever read anyway, adding a new ‘contraindication’ in the fine print. By the time Vanessa Young died from Prepulsid, there had been five label changes over ten years, yet sales had kept growing to $ 1 B/year.

Since the 1960s, forty-one drugs have been taken off the Canadian market, many or most for injuring or killing patients. No one at Health Canada has even kept a record of why these drugs were withdrawn.
What is wrong with Health Canada? Why is a new Drug Agency needed?

So drug companies tell spokespeople in the media what to say, rather than health officials who regulate the corporations having their say on the matter in protecting the people! Total garbage.

When a drug is injuring or killing patients, or gets bad publicity, officials at Health Canada and the pharmaceutical companies exchange notes, so our regulators are directed what to say to the media about the drug by the people who make and sell it.

The Canadian drug record-keeping is totally awash. Really, even with our health care system being really strong relative to other countries, we cannot keep track of what drugs caused patient deaths properly? What kickbacks are offered to these drug companies to keep a low down on the profiles?

Health Canada does not routinely investigate why drugs kill patients. They track the adverse drug reaction reports on their web site. That’s like police officer taking crime reports and never investigating them.

Since the 1960s, forty-one drugs have been taken off the Canadian market, many or most for injuring or killing patients. No one at Health Canada has even kept a record of why these drugs were withdrawn.

It is an obvious conflict of interest that Health Canada is supposed to keep unsafe drugs off the market, while working to help pharmaceutical companies market their drugs. There are many other safer therapies that help patients deal with medical conditions, including diet change, exercise, better sleep habits, reductions in alcohol and tobacco use, sanitary solutions, chiropractic care, light therapy, and massage. The big pharma companies only have one idea: a pill for every ill.

Health Canada does not order risky or dangerous drugs off the market, although no responsible Minister of Health would refuse to take bureaucratic direction on such an action. Instead they ‘negotiate’ the fine print on safety warnings and the drug labels to help keep the drugs on the market, knowing most doctors never read them.

This author of the article comes up with great points, and so makes me furious as to how these corporate giants can get away with murder. But just like in economics, for one person to be better off, someone else has to be worse off. Is this Orwell, or just a saying we go by nowadays? Why can't we all be better off?

The Laws of the Pharmaceutical Industry

Top 16 explanations how the pharmaceutical giants continue to thrive in our economies, while patients continue to suffer under their grasp!

The main principles governing the pharmaceutical “business with disease.” It is not in the financial interests of the pharmaceutical industry to prevent common diseases – the maintenance and expansion of diseases is a precondition for the financial growth of this industry.

1. The pharmaceutical industry is an investment industry driven by the profits of its shareholders. Improving human health is not the driving force of this industry.

2. The pharmaceutical investment industry was artificially created and strategically developed over an entire century by the same investment groups that control the global petrochemical and chemical industries

3. The huge profits of the pharmaceutical industry are based on the patenting of new drugs. These patents essentially allow drug manufacturers to arbitrarily define the profits for their products.

4. The marketplace for the pharmaceutical industry is the human body – but only for as long as the body hosts diseases. Thus, maintaining and expanding diseases is a precondition for the growth of the pharmaceutical industry.

5. A key strategy to accomplish this goal is the development of drugs that merely mask symptoms while avoiding the curing or elimination of diseases. This explains why most prescription drugs marketed today have no proven efficacy and merely target symptoms.

6. To further expand their pharmaceutical market, the drug companies are continuously looking for new applications (indications) for the use of drugs they already market. For example, Bayer’s pain pill Aspirin is now taken by 50 million healthy US citizens under the illusion it will prevent heart attacks.

7. Another key strategy to expand pharmaceutical markets is to cause new diseases with drugs. While merely masking symptoms short term, most of the prescription drugs taken by millions of patients today cause a multitude of new diseases as a result of their known long-term side effects. For example, all cholesterol-lowering drugs currently on the market are known to increase the risk of developing cancer – but only after the patient has been taking the drug for several years.

8. The known deadly side effects of prescription drugs are the fourth leading cause of death in the industrialized world, surpassed only by the number of deaths from heart attacks, cancer and strokes (Journal of the American Medical Association, April 15, 1998). This fact is no surprise either, because drug patents are primarily issued for new synthetic molecules. All synthetic molecules need to be detoxified and eliminated from the body, a system that frequently fails and results in an epidemic of severe and deadly side effects.

9. While the promotion and expansion of diseases increase the market of the pharmaceutical investment industry - prevention and root cause treatment of diseases decrease long-term profitability; therefore, they are avoided or even obstructed by this industry.

10. Worst of all, the eradication of diseases is by its very nature incompatible with and diametrically opposed to the interests of the pharmaceutical investment industry. The eradication of diseases now considered as potential drug markets will destroy billions of investment dollars and eventually will eliminate this entire industry.

11. Vitamins and other effective natural health therapies that optimize cellular metabolism threaten the pharmaceutical “business with disease” because they target the cellular cause of today’s most common diseases - and these natural substances cannot be patented.

12. Throughout the more than one hundred year existence of the pharmaceutical industry, vitamins and other essential nutrients, with defined functions as cofactors in cellular metabolism, have been the fiercest competition and the greatest threat to the long-term success of the pharmaceutical investment business.

13. Vitamins and other effective natural health therapies that effectively prevent diseases are incompatible with the very nature of the pharmaceutical “business with disease.”

14. To protect the strategic development of its investment business against the threat from effective, natural and non-patentable therapies, the pharmaceutical industry has – over an entire century - used the most unscrupulous methods, such as:

(1) Withholding life-saving health information from millions of people. It is simply unacceptable that today so few know that the human body cannot produce vitamin C and lysine, two key molecules for connective tissue stability and disease prevention.

(2) Discrediting natural health therapies. The most common way is through global PR campaigns organized by the Pharma-Cartel that spread lies about the alleged side effects of natural substances – molecules that have been used by Nature for millennia.

(3) Banning by law the dissemination of information about natural health therapies. To that end, the pharmaceutical industry has placed its lobbyists in key political positions in key markets and leading drug export nations.

15. The pharmaceutical “business with disease” is the largest deception and fraud business in human history. The product “health” promised by drug companies is not delivered to millions of patients. Instead, the “products” most often delivered are the opposite: new diseases and frequently, death.

16. The survival of the pharmaceutical industry is dependent on the elimination by any means of effective natural health therapies. These natural and non-patentable therapies have become the treatment of choice for millions of people despite the combined economic, political and media opposition of the world’s largest investment industry.

Fact is.... people sign the contract, sign the dotted line.

They know what they're doing.

You are touching on a subject that if I were in a place of "power"...I would make it a top priority to completely decommission all pharmaceutical production...until further notice. Drug Companies, as I have said many times, are the children of Dr. Menegle. As they stand in their present incarnation, they are of NO USE to the health of the worlds people. At one point they did have their value...but now...don't think so.

The two quoted paragraphs above are the main reason that the medical community is "what it is". Overrun with greed and the "business of sickness". Nothing will change until things are destroyed completely and rebuilt.

Unfortunately, most of the world is uneducated in exactly how their bodies work and what they can do from a natural point of view to care for themselves. Then again...such a good job has been done to dumb most out there down, that they either just don't care to learn...or really do like the illusion of giving up their health to somebody they mistakenly believe do care about them.

Lately, all my run ins with medication and those poor, poor, doctors driving their Mercedes Benz sedans and living in big $$$ homes is becoming proof that there are NO HEALERS in Aleopathic Medicine. Big Pharma and the Medical Community are cut from the same's all about the money and Greed.

It has been written, "Physician, heal thy self." Those words could ring no more true than at this time.

I'm sure that participants in drug testing must sign a waiver for non-retribution should they get sick and/or bite the proverbial dust. A friend of mine has been involved in countless drug trials. Usually not drugs for a serious condition, as she is a healthy, attractive lady between 30 - 40 years during a decade of drug testings. She has suffered no noticeable physical effects.

Looking at the big picture, how many people are involved in drug testing worldwide? Of those, how many get sick and/or die? That would be good to know. I imagine that no drug can be approved without human testing. Some people are going to be allergic to some drugs, and they won't know it until they've taken the drug. They might die, and it's sad, but there is no way around that apparently.

So, the question is, are we better off not having any new drugs? Or, are we willing to take the risk and test new drugs on humans knowing full-well that some few might die? Compare this to driving. We KNOW people are going to die on roads. 40,000 give/take per year, I think, die in traffic accidents. Maybe it's a lot more, but it's a LOT. Yet, do we drive?
