Democracy, casino style

www.latimes.com

A City Council race is determined with a card draw. No jokers. Aces are high.

Of course this Las Vegas suburb would break an electoral tie with nothing more than a deck of cards.

Nevada's press-your-luck culture stretches far beyond the video poker screens embedded in many bar tops. Its economy cratered when the Silver State wagered everything on the casino and construction industries.

Ties in local elections? They're also left to fate.

Now here is a truly innovated approach to election grid lock and ill-informed voters and the Powers that Be determining elections.

Leave it all up to one draw of the cards! Pick a card any card and you might win a chance to represent the people, lunch with lobbyists, go on fun all expense paid trips with lobbyists, and get yourself a nice office and secretary courtesy of the Taxpayers!

This sure would be one way to end all the divisive left/right bickering in a dog and pony show that leave Americans badly divided every two to four years in congressional and presidential races.

Party and platforms would no longer matter, neither would experience or stated intent, Lady Luck becomes the ultimate arbiter of our future and fate while of course enjoying free cocktails, a scrumptious buffet and live entertainment.

Call me crazy but I love this idea!

They'd just find a way to "stack the deck".

Literally, in this case.

They very well might, but it sure would make election day more exciting.

This years winner a cocker spaniel from Nebraska will now become the first dog to rule nation.

Well not quite.

pretty crazy huh? but it ain't the first time this happened. the town of show low arizona was named in a similar fashion.

Show Low received its name when C.E. Cooley and Marion Clark decided there was not enough room for both of them in their settlement. The two men agreed to let a game of cards decide who was to move. According to the story, Clark said, "If you can show low, you win." Cooley turned up the deuce of clubs and replied, "Show low it is."

As a gambling man, I have to say I really love this idea.

Much more sexy than drawing straws!

hell, it can't be any worse then the way we are doing things now, as if that way is working. I say let everything be a gamble from here on out.

invade a country? throw the dice
raise taxes? spin the wheel
pass a bailout for wallstreet? FOLD!

Step right up to the roulette wheel of deficit reduction! Let's see how much we will claim to "cut" today, shall we?

Wait just a minute, though. Maybe this isn't such a bad idea. After all, the casinos do have a history of being able to succinctly and efficiently deal with cheats and thieves. I'm just not sure there is enough open desert space available, without double stacking.

I wonder if Pesci is going to be busy for a few years, or could we put him on our payroll?
