Just a figure of speech to mean when TPTB decide that your number is up and they now need you (or your money) for something. "Sheeple" will never see that coming.

The difference is in how the Apple devices store the information on the device and on your PC if you connect them, and not your cell phone provider. Where, again, the authorities (like in Michigan) can get the data without a warrant or subpoena.

You don't want to be tracked? Well there's an app for that.

'untrackerd' will delete all entries and blocks writing to the database that stores the locations. It's available on cydia.

i geuss some have not read the article..this application is different than gps tracking in a phone or when people twitter or do the facebook 'check-in'...from the article

constantly record and store their users' locations in unencrypted files. These files are basically very long lists of latitude-longitude coordinates and timestamps, and they can be found on the devices themselves as well as within the software backups saved on users' computers.

unencrypted files, company wont comment about this app, customers not told about it, downloads to your computer automaticaly and nowat to remove data from the phone and no way to stop the function from recording location. why??? why have such an extensive feature on a phone and then not tell the customers about it? if this feature is for finding poor lost children ect, why not tell the customer about it? and if ophones can be tracked anyway, why have this feature anyway? anyhting on a computer can be hacked......just asking questions

No, Google phones are doing the exact same thing... only they had the forethought to encrypt the file.

Speaking of which, Al Franken is threatening a Congressional hearing over this. Speciffically, Congress wants to know why the location file wasn't encrypted. Little to no mention of who is getting the file information or what it is being used for... just "Why wasn't the file encrypted." Orwell was a genius.

Yep.

Read about Franken, but no one is actually getting the file burdman, for now it's just sitting there doing nothing. The real hooplah was in what COULD be done with such an unencrypted file if it made it beyond the borders of the PC/MAC.

Other location data that got passed along to various 3rd party apps were handled appropriately (by asking consent) this was the only one that for some reason was just compiled for no obvious reason and without consent of any kind.

But both Apples and Googles ToS are arguable in that, some of their language can suggest that it covers it....we'll find out I'm sure though.

In case anyone is having trouble understanding just what the problem is, here it is in a nutshell:

The iPhone/iPad, *REGARDLESS OF ANY SETTING OR AGREEMENT* is recording the phone/pad location and sending this data back to Apple when you next hook it up to iTunes to update your music collection.

Apple are linking this location data together with date and time, and storing it against your iTunes account, thence the reason why when you change your iPad/iPhone the history follows you.

It is the ultimate personal tracking device, and only one up from the phones that could be coerced into switching on the mic/camera remotely and without the users knowledge.

If you don't want to be tracked, don't use the (any) phone. Period. Even if you switched off the GPS, it can still locate using cell data.

No, it's not.

It's remaining locally on the machine you sync it with, in case you were having trouble with understanding how it was operating.

Years in the industry and several packet sniffers and and packet analyzers have verified this for me. It's not leaving the local machine.
