Ah well I'm not a great cat lover but its good news for a change....

The small island in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, is home to at least 100, mostly elderly, people and many more cats, which are valued for their beauty, companionship, and ability to keep the rodent population down in this fishing area. A shrine dedicated to cats exists in the middle of the island -- a favorite of tourists and feline lovers worldwide

I know its not much to cheer about but Tashirojima is on the East coast and very close to the devastation, I'm hoping we'll get some more 'good news' reported soon

Location on the map with the EQ and Nuclear Power plant for reference.

Thanks so much for posting that. The scale of the disaster is just so hard to get my head around that - as a cat lover - this is the first thing to actually have an emotional impact on me. I hope that doesn't make me come across as a bad or uncaring person

I have never heard of that place either. Thank you for the post OP.

That cat picture is very cool! I have a huge white cat with blue eyes that looks just like that picture, but my kitty has long hair. The orange markings are the same as well.

I'm more of an animal enthusiast than specific animal lover (dogs, horses and British wildlife get and extra thumbs up though). My mum used to run a cat protection shelter when I was growing up so I got a bit overdosed on them

I've been so distraught by the whole Japan tragedy that I didn't think it would hurt to trawl for some good news from the animal front

lol I'm sure small rodents and birds are quite welcome even if dogs aren't

Even though I am 100% a dog person... I'm still glad the cats are doing a-okay.

I wish there were subtitles with that
The old lady reminds me of two old ladies I knew in Cornwall when I was younger, they were 'sisters' with dozens of cats, their house was 'interesting' to say the least.

I haven't been able to find a decent video of 'cat island' yet.
