1996 Christchurch Earthquake Documentary

Only 8 minutes but well worth the watch for something done 16 years ago.

Just listening the comments of these people is just amazing. How accurate they were on the buildings they pointed out in this documentary. Many of them a now a pile of rubble.

The one gentleman said it well...

"Well, it's a question of money, I suppose."

Looking at the geology of NZ, the incredible number of earthquakes over the years, the grand, historic buildings that look good but are flimsy, the enormous amount of money it would take to stabilize them...most officials would rather take the chance and wait it out.

Looks like their luck ran out on this one.

I hope they adopt the stringent California earthquake building codes in the restoration of CC so this doesn't happen again.
