BEIJING: China’s military spending will rise 12.7 per cent in 2011 to about $91.5 billion, a parliamentary spokesman said on Friday, resuming a long string of double-digit annual increases after an unexpected slowdown in 2010. Li Zhaoxing announced the increase as the National People’s Congress, the quasi-legislature, prepared to open its annual session Saturday.

Beijing's Buildup Stirs Fears. (By JEREMY PAGE and JASON DEAN in Beijing and JULIAN E. BARNES in Washington march 5, 2011.) []

BEIJING—Japan expressed concern over China's planned double-digit rise in defense spending this year, highlighting trepidation in the region about China's escalating military and economic might after a week of fresh Chinese territorial confrontations with Japan, South Korea and the Philippines.

Japan Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara urged the Chinese government to be more transparent about how it planned to use its newfound military firepower, saying, "Whether it should be regarded as offensive or defensive would require a close look."

The comments came after China announced plans early Friday to increase its defense budget by 13% this year and as the week's clashes built on concerns that China will increasingly use its escalating military power to assert its territorial claims in the region

Such fears have prompted many of its neighbors to to shore up defense ties with the U.S. and beef up their own militaries, threatening to push Asia into a new arms race.

See if we Voted 1 China then we wouldn't need to spend gazillions of $$$'s on that BS and we could spend the entire worlds current defence budget on something FAR MORE fusion power stations ect.

How many hospitals and schools would that build?

Wouldn't we all prefer to spend those $'s that just kill people on something far more noble?

Great post OL!

I believe the USA will not go out as the world's leader with a bang, but rather with an economic whimper. It is important to remember that China is intrinsically linked with the US... Oh, what a tangled web we weave... :O

has something to do with them no longer letting the dollar drag them down anymore? with the yuan as the new global currency it makes perfect sense. we did basicly the same thing all the time, and its only because the dollars were being raked in for food/oil. chinas turn. if you should be worried about any country destroying america, start with america. they are suspect #1 at this point, am i right?

Well it is expensive to provide 1.5 billion people with sunglasses. They have 2 suns in the set over there now
right? It was on ATS yesterday. Of course this will some how give rise to the pentagon spending 2 more Trillion
dollars for a ten year fight in Libya and greater North Africa. Because the sun will be brighter over there and skin block AND sunglasses with cost a lot.
