Most of it has been covered here. Observation. Which means look at your thought but don't judge the thought. Look and let it go. Sometimes instead of
thoughts I like to observe sensations or feelings. How the sheets feel against my skin, tingling sensations, coolness, hotness etc. Be careful when
you are observing feelings as we tend to put a story after the feeling. For example, if you are anxious, dont fall into the trap of thinking why you
are anxious. Just feel it. Acknowledge the feeling. Say, yeah, I feel this uneasiness in my chest. Don't say, I'm anxious because X or Y.
Other times I observe sounds, this is my favorite when it's raining. I listen to the rain, the car passing in the distance, the bird chirping, its
amazing how much it's going on when you think it's quiet.
Later as you gain you gain mastery, you'll be able to quiet your mind completely, but that's an effect like some people mentioned before.
