Authorities used "vein matching" to identify Pearl killer

Federal agents have backed up al Qaeda captive Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's confession in the killing of journalist Daniel Pearl by using photographs of the veins in his hands, according to a new report released Thursday.

Mohammed confessed to beheading Pearl after his 2003 arrest in Pakistan. But the U.S. admission that he had been subjected to "waterboarding" -- a practice historically treated as torture -- while in CIA custody cast doubt on the reliability of his confession, according to a lengthy investigation of the Pearl case by the Center for Public Integrity.

According to the report, the FBI and CIA used stills from the video of Pearl's killing to match the patterns of the veins in Mohammed's hand in 2004 and repeated the process in 2007, after Mohammed repeated his confession during a hearing at the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

"Beyond KSM's confession, the U.S. government has never revealed any corroborating evidence," the report states. But it called the vein match the "best evidence" the United States has linking Mohammed to Pearl's 2002 slaying.

Since KSM was tortured to extract confessions the authorities had to find some real evidence. And they came up with vein matching. Yes, vein matching. Has anyone ever heard of this? Sounds pretty fishy to me.

And then there's this:

Even the grisly video of Pearl's death had to be restaged, "because the cameraman failed to capture the original scene."

Mohammed moved so quickly to cut Pearl's throat that the photographer failed to load a tape into his camera, according to the report. He repeated the killing for the camera, severing Pearl's head in the process and making sure the photographer showed the blood still pouring through Pearl's throat.

This is the first time I have seen an admission that the Pearl video did not depict his murder. I recall there being many posts on the internet about it looking as if Pearl was already dead. I myself could not actually watch the video.

So, conspiracy time: Was Pearl really killed by KSM? Was he killed by "us"?

Note: I am not saying KSM is an innocent man. He is not. I simply am asking if he really did kill Daniel Pearl. Since he was tortured, how can any of his confessions be believed?

Vein analysis could really work. It's certainly got more scientific proof behind it than analysis of bullets and spent casings.

Vein matching is as unique as fingerprint matching, but if they matched his veins to the ones seen in the video and the video doesn't really show the killing, can he still be accused of the killing?

Well, if he's the only one on the recording from the time the murder was committed, I'd think that's good enough. I mean, he was clearly there, and involved since he held the poor bugger's head. That'd be enough for me.

Thanks, I was unaware of vein matching. I still wonder though, if those accused of the killing carried it out. Certainly we now know that the beheading was not the murder.
