Do they take thousands of years to begin? How would the beginning of a magnetic pole shift manifest? What are the signs?

And since you plan on getting destroyed and everything anyway...can I have your car?

It is now self evident that the Earth's magnetic poles are shifting. This has been predicted for 2011/2012, and is now happening.
Just turn on the news.
It's all "matter-of-fact" now.

Ok, I'll bite: predicted by who exactly? And how much do we know scientifically about magnetic pole shifting and reversals? Are you aware that according to some scientists such a magnetic pole reversal may be rapid and quick or it may take a thousand years to complete? In the first case, you could be right about 2011/12, in the latter case you would be dead wrong, because we might be able to say that this hypothetical pole reversal started in our age, but it won't be complete for another 1000 years which is a long time, you know.

Oh, and one last thing, just to clarify your position: are you talking about pole shifting (happens all the time as far as I know, has got something to do with Earth's wobble, AFAIK) or about a gradual or abrupt pole reversal?
And no, I don't think that it really is "matter of fact". If you show me that the majority of the scientific community agrees with you and your opinion, I'll maybe convert and apologize to you, because obviously in that hypothetical senario you would be right and I wrong. I doubt that is going to happen, however.

No real mention of the years of denial and name calling: "They're just a bunch of nuts who pick and choose their facts to support an absurd argument. And besides, just because the poles are shifting doesn't mean 2012/2012 is any different than 2009 or 1724 for that matter.

Denial can have many meanings. One of them is one of the phases of grieving, for example (no, can't be my loved one who died; must be someone else, the neighbor's maybe). Some denials are rooted in logic and reason and some are not. And if the poles are just shifting, as they do all the time since time immemorial, that statement would be true. Nothing special about 2012, except for all the New Age hype, just another year. Even if we are talking about a quick, fast magnetic pole reversal, there will be not much harm done, except maybe for some satellite failures here and there.

I think it's time for the deniers to either re-evaluate their untenable position.
But this won't happen. They're probably in a confab at this very moment formulating the next series of denials in the very face of imminent earth changes that are becoming more and more self-evident.

I don't think so. At least, you have done nothing to convince me that the deniers' position is untenable and needs re-evaluation.

Give it up. The truth is rapidly making itself known. No amount of denial or disinformation can stop what's coming down the pike.

You know this works both ways, you know. Hypothetically, if I were a denier (am not really, I am more agnostic in that matter) I could say to you: "Give it up! The truth is rapidly making itself known. No amount of fear mongering or disinformation can stop what's coming down the pike." See, works both ways, that's why you need to substantiate your claims with good evidence. I would like to refer you to my signature in that regard, because I believe it has a high enough relevance here.

What needs to change is how we react to the denial that is running rampant, even here on ATS.

Ok, I am all ears, but if the above is any indication, you would like to boss the deniers around and make them shut up, essentially depriving them of their right to freedom of speech. Am I right or am I wrong?

Here's my plan: Ignore the deniers who are obviously never going to believe what's happening right now, in front of their own eyes. If we stop to try and persuade them, all we'll be doing is wasting valuable time. They're on a sinking ship. They had their chance to listen.

OMG, I was dead wrong
(oh and OMG is a figure of speech, since my stance on religion is agnostic). Sure, become a denier yourself then, because that's what you do when you ignore unpleasant discussions and unpleasant arguments. You deny that a problem even exists, just by ignoring it. Sweep it under the rug to hide and cover it up instead of bringing it into the light. Deny Ignorance, ATS needs a motto change, I think. There are days in here that I can count the people who are really actively trying to deny ignorance on one hand and they are usually swarmed by people hell-bent on promoting ignorance, bigotry and crack-pot ideas.

No, you cannot have it; it was promised to me. Just kidding!
On-topic, important questions I think that this_is_who_we_are raised. Unfortunately, I am not knowledgeable enough to answer them in a scientifically correct and acceptable way. I think even specialist scientists are not entirely sure about those things. Because we have no written record about such a pole shifting or reversal. Yes, we can theorize a lot and lots of computer simulations to arrive at scientifically sound conclusions, but until we observe such a phenomenon directly we have no way of knowing what will really happen. Just my 2 EuroCents.

Regarding the disinformation, it would be advisable for everybody to take the news (and views!) with a pinch of salt and a cheeky dose of imagination.

Critical thinking helps with that, although I am not sure what you are calling disinformation here.

No matter the outcome, the belief that something is bound to happen in 2012 is rampant throughout the world. Governments will have to monitor news in order to avoid mass hysteria in any case. Even the most unfortunate grouping of words in a headline can act as a trigger

Yes, they are called Internet memes and urban legends and so on. I don't think there will be panic though next year. It is my belief that most people don't really concern themselves with such matters, because they have much more pressing issues to tackle, like earning a decent wage to make living or even basic needs survival.

Most people are like, "I don’t believe something will happen, surely not" but really they are keeping their eyes peeled for something in the news that can confirm their doubts, albeit subconsciously. Even the religious believe something is about to happen.

I must be the exception that confirms the rule of thumb, then, because I don't believe anything extraordinary will happen in 2012. Just another year (..."older and deeper in debt"), business as usual, move along, nothing to see here. And no, I rarely watch news, but when I do, I do not look out for subtle hints that the world will end next year - not consciously and not unconsciously, although in latter case I would really not know, would I?
).

The religious people always believed doom and gloom, OMG the world will end tomorrow, scenarios. It's in the nature of the beast: how else would the priests be able to control the "flock" (Should be "sheeple" really, but I do not really like that label, while flock is right from the Holy Book of the Christians.).

There has never been a better time to doubt everything you read.

It's an accepted and univeral truth I think: don't believe anything people tell you or you read about or see with your own eyes on TV (famous case: some doctored genocide report from Romania after the regime there collapsed. So, a French TV crew documented a mass grave in some village somewhere and it presented it as mass murder grave (genocide?) by the communist regime. A few weeks later they were forced to retract that story: all they had found was a mass grave of village people who had died of a highly contagious natural disease and the authorities had to bury them quick and in a mass grave to prevent the disease from spreading around. Definitely, don't believe any politician, though; they all lie. Does not matter if they lean left or right, conservative or progressive, the moment they open their mouth it's all lies, especially during an election campaign.

I'd be interested to know the source information for the "80 degree shift in 13 days".

Steens Mountain, Oregon -- 6 degrees per day: Earth’s Magnetic Field Flipped Superfast

And here's an interesting "speculative hypothesis" from a NOAA scientist:

And regarding the premise of your thread, it's good to see that people are finally catching on.

These pseudoskeptics spend their lives on ATS, but somehow don't believe anything that's written.

Ask yourself, would you spend all your free time on a board where you were skeptical of everything?
