I spent 3 hours in the ER on the 15th. I just got my $11,000.00 bill in the mail.

I had an EKG and a urine test and a ultrasound. Plus some intravenous pain killer. My hands are shaking uncontrollably right now because I am so ticked off. MEDICINE SHOULD NOT COST THIS MUCH. I have lost my job and make $50.00 dollars a month. To be fair I must say that Banner Baywood discounted my bill by $8,000.00 so that my final bill is only $3,000.00, but I still cannot pay that when I only have fifty bucks a month coming in. I owe the Radiologist $460.00 dollars for their test and I still have not gotten the bill from the ER doctor who will bill separately. I will update this thread after I talk to the financial responsibility representative from Banner Baywood.

The American health system never ceases to amaze me! I can't believe that in the supposed greatest and most powerful country that this is allowed to happen. It truly is extortion and monopoly- all I can say is you have my sympathy. An instance when I truly am glad to live in the UK.

I'm not sure what the point is. You had all of these procedures done,
knowing you only have $50.00 a month, you knew this going to the
Medical Center. Now what? Are you mad at society or the Hospital
in general because they didn't wipe out the entire debt? You stated
that they took off $8,000 and have $3,000 left to pay off. I would say
that is a pretty darn good arrangement. What are you complaining
about? Suck it up and get a part time job. Do something besides
complaining to ATS.

Move to Canada. I had similar tests done for free. I always get nervous when I go to the states without insurance that something is going to happen to me and I am going to end up in the hospital...I need to look into getting yearly health insurance for down there.

The point is you shouldn't have to pay so much for healthcare- all it does is create a clear class divide. Why should someone who isn't so well off suffer? It's not always as simple as you seem to believe it is to get a job, either. Unemployment isn't so high because so many people don't want to work, it's because there aren't enough jobs. Also, what about someone who had to go to hospital because their injury meant they couldn't work? Stop jumping to conclusions and being so judgemental.

Good to know that empathy and compassion are still alive and well

I suppose if you had a medical emergency and were unemployed you'd decide to just lay there and die rather than actually seek treatment. And if you did seek treatment you'd be able to pay an 11,000 dollar bill on a part time job? Can't have those poor people weighing us down. Better they die quickly to decrease the surplus population and leave the world much better for us rich folks.

A clear indicator of a scheme being afoot is the ease with which an $11,000 gets dropped to $3,000.

What are the factors present in that drastic difference in cost?

Something tells me that even that $3,000 is still a substantial markup as with any good or service.

How many of us with insurance are blindly and dumbly paying the pre-corrected $11,000 amounts? Since nobody really shops around because medical consumers are one of two people, insured and complacent or uninsured and blind with rage, I'm willing to bet we're all paying outrageous prices for things that are essentially buffered from the real marketplace by virtue of insurance and politics.

So I want to know why it was so easy for a hospital to just write off $8,000.

So your solution is that someone who needs medical attention and can't afford it should just suck it up and go without. If they gave the OP all that, it was probably a pretty serious situation; meaning that you're basically saying that people who can't afford life-saving medical treatment should just go ahead and die.

first of all...hope your health problems are better and things work out for you. Now, on to what I want to say.
I agree with you, medicine should NOT cost what you were charged...but as I have found out unfortunately...you, me and the guy down the street are no more than a commodity to any hospital. We are only MONEY to them.

Each Doctor feels that they are due their cash whether they saw you for 5min. or not at all...they are assigned to that little piece of the ER, which you so generously were charged for. The drugs you were given tho they probably cost less than $25 per dose to make...in business there is always overhead...as I said, it's all about the MONEY.

If you are uninsured, and are not on state insurance...be prepared to be harassed to hello and back by all these doctors wanting their piece of you. Doesn't matter what you can pay. Period. They want their money and they will go to any lengths to attempt to make you pay.

Since you only make $50 a month and if you are disabled...why don't you go on SSI...you would get state medicaid and any port in the storm will do when it is needed to survive.

Oh, so I don't care about anyone and don't give a rats ass? I don't care about whining and sniveling
people that seem to want everything handed to them on a golden platter, that's what I don't give a
rats ass about. Health care ISN'T free. Only to welfare folks and those wanting more and more and
more entitlements that are paid for by the working stiffs that go to work everyday in this country,
and to illegal creeps that sneak into our country and demand everything free. I am not saying the
OP is any of the above, and don't try to tell me that is what I am saying. Until health care is truly
FREE, as you would demand, then pay your freaking bills and quit bitchin' to everyone else.

...How do you have internet (assuming it's at your house?) or even the time to post on ATS when you get $50.00 a month? I'd be trying to find a job or at least make something to sell at home to make some cash.

I wouldn't downplay the 8,000 you got knocked off -- some people aren't that lucky.

...i can appreciate the angst...

...what about medicare/medicaid?...

...as for the money owed, pay a dollar per month and keep a record... if thats the best you can do, that'll have to be good enough... try not to stress over it cuz that'll make ya more prone to health issues...

He was looking for comforting thoughts and guidence from his community here on ATS, nothing wrong with that.

He needed medical care and was hit with a bill, its saying if you want to be well and alive and disease free your gonna pay for it.

It's stories like these that make me grateful for the NHS, I have had medication, operations and scans and never had to pay a penny. I can live my life knowing if I break a bone or develop cancer it won't bankrupt me.

ALL medical treatment should be free, its your right as a human to have a good quality of life.

To the OP, hope you are feeling OK, besides the bill

And you all complain about our 'socialist' UK medical system.

Believe me, it is at time like this that a national medical system serves all people - rich or poor.

Edit to say: Obama might be on to something even though the vast majority think he is a Communist. Time to rethink your attitudes towards medicine and stop the insurance profit machine.

To the OP: I hope you find a way out of your financial situation and get well soon.

The American health system is an absolute joke. This is why it makes me laugh when you americans get all up in arms and complain about Obama's new health care thingy, and its astounding its actually taken this long for someone to do something. Almost every other country has it and it helps a hell of a lot. I just had major shoulder surgery, and with my private and public health care cover I barely have to pay anything.

Hope it works out for you
