Hu Jintao, the Chinese president, has been named the most powerful person on Earth knocking Barack Obama off the top spot.

Of Mr Hu, Forbes wrote: “Unlike Western counterparts, Hu can divert rivers, build cities, jail dissidents and censor internet without meddling from pesky bureaucrats, courts. Recently surpassed Japan to become the world’s second-largest economy both in absolute and purchasing power terms. I find this poll rather remarkable.

Correct me, if I am wrong, but I believe this is the first time since I can remember a US President being removed from the top spot. But the list is a reflection of a changing world - with China being (defecto) the most significant country in the world.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, gets sanctioned without the opinion of China.
