Disband Congress!

We all know our elected representatives are rotten to the core and cannot be trusted to represent us once they set foot inside the capitol building. They tell us what we want to hear and then, once their jobs are secure for another two years, they continue to follow the orders of their corporate masters. Voting out the bums only means that we are switching one corporate slave for another.

We all want a change for the better in government, is abolishing Congress and taking the wheel into our own hands the best course of action?

Vote NO for Congress - why Congress has failed the People on health care, debt and freedom

And the sad, blunt truth of the matter is that no one in Washington will save us. If We the People wish to save ourselves from the disastrous management of our country that has been demonstrated in Washington D.C., we are going to have to take America back from the corporations and the special interest groups.

The logical thing to do would be to disband Congress. That it even exists at all is a throwback to a pre-telegraph world where long-distance communications were impossible, so people actually sent someone to Washington to represent their interests. These "representatives" then joined together in the "House of Representatives" and later become known as Congressmen (and women).

But today, with instant online communications, the People don't really need anyone to represent them in Washington anymore. Voters could simply vote directly on proposed legislation, without the House and Senate getting in the way. That's called a "Direct Democracy," and it would eliminate Congress entirely, reverting the power to pass legislation back to the People.

Personally, I believe the People could do a better job of voting on legislation than members of Congress. For one thing, the People can't be bought out by corporate interests because there are simply too many people to buy off.

Of course, to do so would require disbanding Congress, and that would take a Constitutional amendment. So don't hold your breath -- members of Congress will surely do whatever it takes to hold on to their power. Most likely, the only way a Direct Democracy ever comes into play is if the current system of government collapses and a new one takes its place.

There's a lesson in all this, by the way. Never give away your power to government. Once you do, it's almost impossible to ever get it back. The American People have given away their power for so long that most Americans have forgotten the power was theirs to begin with. (And that's the way Congress would like to keep it, no doubt.)

Natural News

Would this actually work or would this just become a more effective means for the people to vote even more government dollars into their own pockets? The poor do outnumber the rich and it would be easy for them to use their numbers to feed off the rich.

Is this a better way or just a different path to our destruction?

While I am no fan of Congress - the answer is not disbandment. In a representative democracy if you take away the "representative" what's left is not a Democracy... it's a Totalitarian regime.

Having said that... what we need is reform. A POTUS or a SCOTUS who will do what they are supposed to do and CHECK and BALANCE the equation.

The abuses are in all three branches and one of those branches will have to step up and take the bitter pill.

Funny part about that, though, is that if a day ever comes when a reformer rises, he or she will be painted as a public nuisance and will probably be ousted before they can make a bit of difference. Yet reforming is not a complicated concept. You don't need to change out congress... You need to stop the hands that keep filling their pockets with money.

Blame those who have purchased our government.

we need a congress

the problem is with congress is that our interests are not being represented

those people who are being represented are the special interests

congressman dont care about you they only care about themselves and their power thats whats wrong with congress

i am a proponent for having a congress like the poster said mob rule is just as dangerous and a congress of special interests............

reform the system and we need a congress that actually obeys the constitution after all they all took an oath to protect and defend it.

I believe that congress serves an important purpose in our form of government. It's not the governing body that is the issue, it's the people we elect to represent us.

True Democracy is mob rule as another post stated, and it would only serve to perpetuate our current problems. We must resort back to the true definition of a republic and be willing to stand against those we elect when their power has become too great.

So in the end, congress has its problems but it is a monster of our own creation. A complacent citizenry paired with a powerful machine of money and power has taken over the life of every American. If the citizens cannot stand for their individual freedoms, than congressional issues are far from our first priority.

I agree, I think a direct democracy would allow the majority to outlaw the minority. With no controls on government, the government always turns on its people. The Constitution has done a poor job of controlling our politicians which is why people are looking for another way. They know that the system we have is broken and are willing to look to alternatives for a quick fix. The problem is, there is no such thing as a quick fix when it comes to government.

With the hatred our politicians draw to themselves, it is no wonder that people from all quarters are looking for alternatives which would get rid of those corrupt scoundrels. People today see the destruction of our politicians as a good thing and many would laugh if they saw Congress destroyed before their eyes.

I'll have to admit, that was my favorite part of the movie.

It makes me wonder if we aren't being conditioned to attempt a violent overthrow of the government so they can crack down on us harder than ever.

We really need a pure republic. The current climate in congress is egregious to say the least that they may take legal bribes in the form of "legal" PAC monies. Political Action Committees should be outlawed immediately. They have way too much influence on our elected officials. Try as we may, the people we send to Washington DC end up corrupted and they in turn corrupt others. There is too much money passed around to congressmen and senators to persuade them to ignore their constituents, except when it's election time. Recalls should be made law as well as tar and feathering.

Congress was formed as a way to distribute the power amongst the population: the branches of government "of the people, by the people, and for the people."

The problem with our representative government is that it was formed in a time when people were inherently honest. In our modern world, the old world rules no longer apply, and neither does the old world thinking. If the Founding Fathers knew of the power/effect of the internet, media, and modernization, the rules would have been written slightly different.

We need Congress, but not the Congress of ancient history. Maybe a Congress with an age cap.

well I surely do not agree
with disbanding congress
as our constitution requires it.
However, a complete overhaul
of the system is required in
all branches.

Maybe even a new Constitution
with the same principles as set
by the founding fathers but re-written
for 21st Century.

A new improved Constitution
with a new Bill of Rights.
Basically a whole new revolution
without the bloodshed.
But the first time I hear of a new world
order implemented in those documents
then it's time for a change of heart.
No NWO !!! and No North American Union !!!
This is America, the United States of America
that is. And No Federal Reserve Banking System
or a Fractional monetary system, seems like
we already been where that will take us.
But I could go with:

USRA

United States of Reformed America

what we need is to close Washington to established corporations and place watchdogs over our representatives to make sure they're doing what they were voted in to do. and to incarcerate all government employees who are clearly breaking the law. including the President, CIA, justice department, pentagon, the fed.

cut all waste spending ,reduce the size of the government, eliminate federal income tax.

TAKE THE MONEY OUT OF POLITICS

then only the sincere and loyal will want to serve.

It isn't the Constitution that has failed, it is the people that have failed. The Constitution is the net that we threw upon the sharks, but we have have not kept up that net and we have let holes form that allow the sharks through to gobble up our rights.

Democracy is 51% of the population robbing the other 49% of their rights.

Voting for our representatives isn't that big of a deal, but when you're voting on every issue, the Constitution always gets lost in the muck. People will vote away rights if given the opportunity. That's why the Constitution isn't just a state charter, but the Supreme Law.

All powers have checks. The people are always superior in the end. But we cannot allow a society that would vote my individual rights away. On the whim, something that is said can turn into a mandate from the people to ban certain speech, to ban my right to self defense, to ban political action.

What we have is a Representative Constitutional Republic, and we're letting the idea that majority vote will be the whole of the written law, and that is not what we're about. We're supposed to be about checks and balances, we're supposed to be about protecting individual and civil rights. Just because a party in congress has 51-60 % of the vote doesn't mean what they're doing is legal and within the confines of their Constitutional mandate. This country has completely forgotten how the process is supposed to work, and WHY it is supposed to work like that.

If we had been following the Constitution we wouldn't be in the mess we're in today. Not even close.

What are you all's thought on this?

If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S. ) to receive the message. Maybe it is time.

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!!!!!

**********************************
Congressional Reform Act of 2010

1. Term Limits.

12 years only, one of the possible options below..

A. Two Six-year Senate terms
B. Six Two-year House terms
C. One Six-year Senate term and three Two-Year House terms

2. No Tenure / No Pension.

A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

3. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people.

4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

6. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

7. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

8. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/11.

The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves.

Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.

Back to pre 1871?.

That would probably work pretty well.

Before you argue this with me,take a look at the things that came along with the civil war.

The things that never went away afterward, and were supposed to.

And figure out why.

God save the republic.

One more thing, you have no constitutional rights because you are not a party to it.
