Leading cause of death in America is masturbating to internet porn during thunderstorms.

Unplug your computer just to be safe.

Use some type of wireless connection with a laptop or other portable device not connected to the mains and it shouldn't matter. A strike might fry the modem but not you.

That won't protect you from a direct strike. If lightning can arc from the sky, it can easily arc over small distances between conductors in any surge protector.

That's more like it. It needs a tornado-proof bunker to boot. It has to pass the signal though and a faraday cage might block it if the gaps are smaller than the wavelength of the carrier. Any lines leading in just need a device attached that has the proper breakover voltage.

I don't believe I did see Enemy of the State (though I did see Panic Room waaay back). I'll wager that it's harder to keep the government out of one's impenetrable internet lair than it is to keep God out.

ETA: I was looking at this and I wonder just what the heck went wrong to bring me to where I am now. Lightning strike?

Just so we're clear on this: ALWAYS unplug your computer (and any other costly electronic devices) for the duration of all thunderstorms.
