Cross vandalism greets Pope's arrival

POLICE are investigating a link between the desecration of a prominent Buxton landmark and the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the UK.

Corbar Cross, a large wooden cross on Corbar Hill, has been cut off at its base by vandals, sparking outrage from local residents and visitors to the area.

it beggars belief < pun > that any idiot would think that this could consitute a meaninful " protest " against the papal visit

i have visited it several time - and its a wonderfull place to visit - corbar hill is very peaceful

and to be honest - the greatest comfort it give me - is as a navigation mark - that i can [ could ] take a bearing to upto 10 miles away

i will state that i am an atheist , and i have no love for catholicism , and contempt for the current pontiff

but the idea of cutting down a cross is utterley insane

I'm an atheist

And I agree with you - why destroy something that isn't harming anyone?

And as a fellow hill walker - I totally dig your bearing waypoint comment.

If you want to protest the pope - arrest him for conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Funny, how come this was not on the news? If this had happenned outside a mosque there would front page headlines. Completely disgusting either way. Does not surprise me in the slightest that this happened.

The only people this is hurting is those in that village. It does not effect the pope, either way it is disgusting. As per usual there is no major headlines on this incident, proves once again, Christian groups are given a backseat, behind other religious organisations.
