WASHINGTON — Congress is moving rapidly just weeks before the start of the school year to speed billions of dollars in emergency education aid to states in hopes of reversing the layoffs of tens of thousands of teachers.

Some $10 billion in aid to school districts is set to flow after a 61-39 Senate vote Thursday — to be followed quickly by a House vote next week — in hopes that it will come in time for many school districts to reconsider teacher layoffs.

Thursday's vote was a hard-earned but partial victory for Democrats and President Barack Obama. Advocates said it could save the jobs of up to 300,000 teachers, police and other public workers.

I'm very torn on this.

I think we need to keep teachers and I think we need to pay them more but how is it OK to pass a bill that says we cant lay off teaches but also not have a budget that allows us to have money to pay for them?

It seems like we are creating band aids like this to keep the populous from feeling a major discomfort at one time and just slowly letting it out. Its like slowly turning up the heat on a frog in water until it allows itself to be boiled to death.

What do you think of this?

What do I think of it? I think the democrats are attempting to hold onto their power in D.C. by passing this bill and in a way that it appears to demonize republicans who voted against the bill.

Why else would a new spending bill, which increases the national debt, and was touted as a stimulus spending bill that was sorely needed, even be brought to a vote? As I recall we still have, oh, more than 450 billion dollars left unspent from last years stimulus spending bill, still laying around, unspent and not assigned to any other projects so far.

Just my .02 New World Units.

I know terrible, let's just shut down the government ala 1995 and that will fix it.

THEN, we can cut taxes to near zero, and only fund the only thing worthwhile, the military. Which we will continuously have at war all over the earth.

Of course the only people that should pay taxes are the poorest Americans because you know, those rich Americans are just better people, and poor people are lazy and don't deserve their money anyway.

The Republican mentality in a nutshell. Let's not educate our children because you know, if the parent's can't afford private schools the kids aren't worth teaching anyway.

Yeah, they are just securing votes.

Come on. Adding yet another 300,000 people to the unemployment line (which will STILL mean taking government money I MIGHT ADD) would be yet another terrible hit to this economy.

This was a no brainer.

Over 200 billion of the stimulus package was set aside for TAX CUTS....for you and me. It's deficit spending....so let's end the tax cuts. Then we can take a bite out of that evil stimulus.

the reason the funding bills are even needed is because your government spends more than it makes

think why that is.

without the miltiary and national defense there is nothing else....in the brink of an eye everything you know would be gone. think not?

and we have seen the educational system for the past 20 years continually put out less educated people than the rest of the world.

republicans get a bum wrap for big business and banking hey guess what democrats have run off businesss and banking if republicans didnt fight to keep what few we have left here there would be no private business or banking here all that will be left is your big brother government--

**fewer business here fewer people working-fewer people earning-fewer people paying taxes..**

get your hands out people when thats happens its comming if people dont step up.

and " republican mentality" what about the democratic mentality for the past 20 years every liberal screams bloody murder when a people say illegals should speak english.

i could say the same about democrats not wanting illegals to be able to pick up any newspaper or book or visit a website without someelse translating it for them but to be dependent on them to be told the "truth"

and bill after bill
bill after bill
spend spend
spend
all the while creating the conditions to have led to the mess.

you people think democrats are your saviors they arent
they are constantly meddling with everything and anything and it all leads back to them
they pass of the hatred onto the republicans because they dont want you to ever see whose ultimatetly responsible here.
and it is democrats.------you really think democrats have your best interest at heart and no the reality of it all is they care about the power and control over You....they have killed religion so they can become your gods.

my thoughts your free to disagree

20 years ago, in most families, both parents didn't have to work to make ends meet. A proud father (or mother) could work his ass off and provide for his family by himself....letting the other parent stay home with their kids and always be there for them...take them to the bus stop...be home when their kids get home from school...help them with homework...etc.

Not anymore....I have a 1 year old daughter....obviously not in school yet. Anyway, this is how my day goes. I get up at 5 in the morning, get my daughter up, give her a bottle, change her diaper and clothes, hurry up and get ready for work, then take her to daycare where she stays for 10/11 hours....and there isn't a DAMNED thing I can do about it. It's a sad thing when essentially a stranger spends nearly as much time with your own kid than the parents do.

But anyway, this is how it will be when she is in school. Odds are I'll be working, along with my wife, and she will have to stay somewhere till we are home. We'll both be tired and try to do our best....but it's not the attention we should be able to give.

People always bring up homeschooling....HOW? How can you do that when both parents work? Have your daycare teach them? Well that kind of defeats the whole purpose doesn't it?

Home schooling is a luxury.

----

Anyway, my whole statement is part of the problem of our education system IMO. It ALL starts at home. Families aren't together like they used to be in the past.

20 years ago there were acutally more good paying jobs here
20 years ago there was less unions, less regualtions and things didnt cost as much......

i hear you man to

things are gonna get worse tho

david one piece of advice and i tell this to anyone with any children today no matter how young they are:

start a ira for them
and a educational fund

if you can and put a little away each month by the time they will need it it will ease the financial part on you.

i realize money may be tight but a little now beats alot later and 18 or 20 years from now god knows how much it will cost.

by no means am i trying to tell you want to do....but thats what i would do

Union membership has dropped significantly since Reagan.....so i don't agree with that statement. It was near 25 percent when he took office, now it is under 10 percent. In terms of trade policy, we had MORE regulations 20 years ago with tariffs....banks were not allowed to do many of the absolutely INSANE things they are doing now...which is a MAJOR reason why American wages have declined and jobs have went overseas....and yes....many Democrats supported this craziness along with Republicans...Clinton signed NAFTA and got us into the WTO.....along with plenty of Republican support.

Look at the things i stated...who truly benefited from these policies? Who gained the most?

Poor people? People looking for handouts? um...no.

Gigantic, monopolostic, transnational corporations benefited from these policies...and because of that...their power has become overwhelming to the point where they control all the media, most resources, and completely corrupted our government to the point of making the voting process nearly irrelevant.

Did you know that ONE corporations owns nearly 70 percent of all the electronic voting machines in this country? Does that seem safe to you?

union memberships maybe down but union entiltment packages values are up

man i dont see it that way
i dont

20 years ago i could throw 100k in a moneymarket and earn 60k a year off it

cant do that today.

so im not seeing what your saying.

one corporation owns all the voting machines?? can you point out the source of that so i can see for myself?

So there is no 2nd Amendment in this country?

Besides the fact that it's called NATIONAL DEFENSE for a reason, not Foreign Occupation and Endless War! We should have a decent military HERE in America, not everywhere else on the freaking planet.

and we have seen the educational system for the past 20 years continually put out less educated people than the rest of the world.

Wonder how that would correlate with decreases in spending in those same schools? If you spend less on something, chances are pretty good that you will get an inferior product.

and " republican mentality" what about the democratic mentality for the past 20 years every liberal screams bloody murder when a people say illegals should speak english.

Do you know why? It's because there's a thing called the 1st Amendment. And the simple fact that we don't have an official language, people are free to speak whatever language they want, it's called FREEDOM not Fascism.

republicans get a bum wrap for big business and banking hey guess what democrats have run off businesss and banking if republicans didnt fight to keep what few we have left here there would be no private business or banking here all that will be left is your big brother government--

I won't hold Democrats free from this mess either, fact of the matter is, it was the deregulation of wall street by democrats that helped foster an environment perfect for the likes of Bernie Madoff.

That still doesn't excuse the Republican mindset of screw the poor, destroy opportunity, fund the military, bomb everyone, help only the rich, rape the environment, kill freedom, hurt small business, and destroy the middle class.

no official language?

what language are you speaking right now
what language are we taught from kindergarten to the end of high school and college( use to be i been out of school for over 25 years so my info may be dated)

what language is on most of our money

etc...

official never said we had one but until the illegals with exception of legal immigrants language was never an issue.

and money spent on education- spend more cash to get the same results- man its not a money issue its the quality of what they are getting and people who either dont want to learn or too busy with their iphones, xboxs, porn surfing or illegal downloading of music and movies.

1st ammendment to me covers legal residents who obey the law and pay taxes.-

you have been fed the status quo line of republicans hating the poor guess no republican has ever helped anyone poor never guess those church goers know nothing bout charity.

and when the bush tax cuts expire you will finally see exactly how much a republican has helped you.

i dont buy that line.....

good post from you tho:p

no official language?

English in the United States is actually the lingua franca. It's the common custom language, but it is not the official language, I have worked jobs where I primarily spoke Russian, or Armenian, and I have also worked jobs where I spoke primarily Spanish. The reason was that there were more people speaking those languages than there were people who spoke English.

what language are you speaking right now

I am typing in English because this is an English/American website, and the T&C state that I am to converse in English. If I was posting on a Russian website, I would type in Russian.

what language for we taught from kindergarten to the end of high school and college

Well, I never went to college, the reason? I am poor, so Republicans made sure to see to it that poor people like me aren't able to go to college cause obviously I am not worthy of higher education based on my financial laziness.

Illegals pay taxes. And amazingly enough, so do us poor people! GASP! That's right, whenever I go to a store and buy something, I pay, wait for it, wait for it, A SALES TAX!

Yes, paying the pension of the city manager of Bell California of $500k+/year has a LOT to do with saving jobs of teachers.

I guess BAILING out the pension schemes of the PUBLIC workers has a LOT to do with saving jobs!

Sometimes the humor just become TOO MUCH!

here we go agian republicans fault cause you didnt goto college.....man

have you never heard of people working 2-3-4 jobs to put themselves through college ............

i dont understand why people blame other people when they have and always have had the power to take their own lives and put it in their own hands....

noone helped me to goto college and i was poorer then....

and illegals paying taxes--STILL ILLEGAL NOT FOLLOWING THE LAW

I think as long as we print money it makes no difference. Inflation can always be offset by bringing in more immigrants. It is how it has been done for years. More people needing money will offset inflation every time. I am quite sure we haven't seen the end of the immigration debate. But, here is an idea...if all the illegal kids went home they could lay off those teachers without effecting the students.

The sad part is there is lots of bad teachers that need to be laid off and many good ones that don't have Jobs.

We have become a country of entitlement instead of a country that produces the best of ...... anything.

This is just typical of what we will see in the near future.
Instead of investing into the public services, i.e., police, firefighters, teachers...

These cities are still keeping their well-paid councils, well-paid mayors, and parks and recreation funds; Keeping their well funded "ear marks" and rounding up all the necessities to pull the plug.

Smart thinking America.
Smart.

We are headed in the right direction!

And you thought the worst was over....
