Scientists Develop First Artificial Brain Section

LONDON (Reuters) - Scientists have developed the first artificial region of the brain -- a silicon chip that mimics an area that controls memory, mood and awareness.

Devised by researchers at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, the chip is designed to carry on the functions of the region known as the hippocampus and could one day be used to help people with brain damage. ry2&cid=570&ncid=753&e=1&u=/nm/20030312/sc_nm/science_brain_dc

"If someone can't form new memories, then to what extent can they give consent to have this implant?" the magazine added.

Heh! Considering that any human-testing that can be done *legally* requires the patient's permission, I don't see how they're going to carry it out all the way...Emphasis on the term *legally*, here...
Seems like they're on a self-defeating course.
