I've had the chorus of this song in my head the last few days, just couldn't figure out who sang it and why it was in my head until i searched on youtube
.... ahead of the times me think and relates to this 'oil spill'.....

So very apt, excellent posting.

Music does help, after all.

wow, I've heard this song quite a few times, but I never noticed how depressing the lyrics are!

Oh, mercy mercy me
Oh, things ain't what they used to be
No, no
Where did all the blue sky go?
Poison is the wind that blows
From the north, east, south, and sea
Oh, mercy mercy me
Oh, things ain't what they used to be
No, no
Oil wasted on the oceans and upon our seas
Fish full of mercury
Oh, mercy mercy me
Oh, things ain't what they used to be
No, no
Radiation in the ground and in the sky
Animals and birds who live nearby are dying
Oh, mercy mercy me
Oh, things ain't what they used to be
What about this overcrowded land?
How much more abuse from man can you stand?
My sweet Lord
My sweet Lord
My sweet Lord

I wish it wasn't an appropriate song, but sadly it is.

Yeh, its very appropriate for whats going on right now and thanks for posting the lyrics!!

I only knew the chorus and its like been playing over and over in my head so i checked for what it was on youtube and up popped Marvin.... I then listened to the whole Lyrics and thought 'wow' this has to go up on ATS!

Just have a look at those Lyrics and then check this disaster....

When our rivers run dry and our crops cease to grow
And when our summers grow longer and winters won't snow
From the banks of the ocean and the ice in the hills
To the fight in the desert where progress stands still
When we've lost our will

That's how we'll know
This is not a test, oh no
This is cardiac arrest
Of a world too proud to admit our mistakes
We're crashing into the ground as all fall from grace

When the air that we breathe becomes air that we choke
When the marsh fever spreads from the swamps to our homes
When your home on the range has been torn down and paved and
The buffalo roam to a slaughterhouse grave
What more will it take

For us to know
This is not a test, oh no
This is cardiac arrest
Of a world too proud to admit our mistakes
Kissing the ground as well fall from grace

This is a chance to set things straight
To bend or break the rules back into place
There is no middle ground, no compromise, we've drawn the line
With perfect aim, we stand back and throw
Glass windows break and it's all about to blow
Lights go out as we pass the torch again
In hope that it stays lit

Neutrality means that you don't really care
Cause the struggle goes on even when you're not there
Blind and unaware

That's how we'll know
This is not a test, oh no
This is cardiac arrest
Of a world too proud to admit our mistakes
We're crashing into the ground as we all, yeah we all, all fall from grace

To proud to admit our mistakes... that we are.

I'm a BIG Marvin Gaye fan. Been listening to him since I was a toddler and my old man would spin his records. I love Mercy, Mercy Me! You're right--it was far ahead of it's time.

One of my anthems, Thank You ! Love it. Propbably in the top 5, eh?
BTW, I was listening to Eve of Destruction today, you know there was so much truth back when. Even as a kid I sought truth and a lot of it was in the music. My featured is "Smiling Faces Sometimes," hope some truth music comes back.

Great Lyrics again.

It is sad indeed what we've done to our Earth.

O well... i think there were plenty of songs from the 60's which had much meaning to them but did the Corps listen?? Nope!

Another extremely apt song from the Sage of Soul is Inner City Blues (make me wanna holler)

Rockets, moon shots
Spend it on the have-nots
Money, we make it
'Fore we see it, you'll take it

Oh, make you wanna holler
The way they do my life
Make me wanna holler
The way they do my life

This ain't livin', this ain't livin'
No, no baby, this ain't livin'
No, no, no, no

Inflation, no chance
To increase finance
Bills pile up, sky high
Send that boy off to die

Oh, make me wanna holler
The way they do my life
Make me wanna holler
The way they do my life, oh baby

Hang ups, let downs
Bad breaks, set backs
Natural fact is
Honey, that I can't pay my taxes

Oh, make me wanna holler
And throw up both my hands
Yea, it makes me wanna holler
And throw up both my hands

Crime is increasing
Trigger happy policing
Panic is spreading
God knows where, where we're heading

Oh, they don't understand
Make me wanna holler
They don't understand

God bless you
And Lord keep you
And may you live, live, live a good life

God bless you
Lord keep you
And may you live, live, live a long long sweet life
Don't let the things get you down
Hold your hands, baby, walk around

Say God bless you
And I'll keep you
I'm praying a prayer for each and everyone of you
Heaven bless you
Heaven keep you

Nice One.

Love the Tunes from back then.

Wish I was in the clubs back then but I was too young and didn't get going till the mid 80's.

Powerful! The other Marvin song too. I never listened to the lyrics. Blows you away. Somehow it makes it worse and better at the same time...
