Women banned from flight for refusing scan

au.news.yahoo.com

A British airport says two women who refused to go through a full-body scanner have been barred from boarding a flight.

Manchester Airport says the women, one of whom is a Muslim, were believed to have been booked to fly out to Islamabad.

They then refused to be scanned, citing medical and religious reasons.

And so it begins...

I personally would feel rather violated going through these machines. It is a pity that these women took a stand and in cost them their flight, however, if more people refused then they would need to look at the system again.

I just wonder whether the extra 'security' that we have gained has been proportionate to the loss of our civil liberties.

I have been against these infernal machines since they were announced. They strip away your dignity all for the prying eyes of un-educated airport security workers to see, and possibly save.

I have written 4 letters a piece to all of my state senators, my congressmen, and I sent one to the White House too. I am completely pissed off about these inventions.

"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security."---Benjamin Franklin

I'm sick and tired of these big wigs playing the "terror card" as it were to enforce even more rules and regulations on their citizens. I bet you won't catch any of the Parliament, or the US Congress dead going through one of these machines.

Such a sick world we live in.

S&F For you, because I absolutely hate these machines.

Exactly !

So much for tens of thousands of people in forums, decrying such invasions of privacy (idiotic scanners) !

Where are they when they're called to defend the 'freedumbs' they claim they'll defend ?

Two women refused the scans. That's it ? Two women ?

Where are the rest ? Sitting obediently in their seats in planes after obediently subjecting themselves --- and their 'freedumbs' --- to the scanners ?

Words are cheap, huh ?

When it comes to action, where are the 'freedumb defenders' ?

If 'terrorists' were even a thousandth of the problem the authorities claim them to be, there wouldn't be a parliament or water, electrical or communications system left operative, world wide

Or gee ---- are we supposed to believe that 'terrorists' suffer from chronic tunnel-vision and stupidity, and therefore only know how to bomb planes in flight ?

I really hope that you aren't insinuating that I am one of these "freedumb" fighters as you so eloquently put it. As I said, I have written letters, and I have chosen to drive to a selected destination (stateside that is) instead of flying, because I will not support any company trying to take away my rights.

If I am paranoid, and you're not lumping me in with the rest of those "freedumb" fighters, my apologies.

One of the women who were muslim?
Ya so what?????

Disgusting man!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Repulsive...

I am disgusted.

News has been circulating about these idiots circulating nude pics and they expect no women to object?

As mentioned women should hold these jobs only, but even then it's not good enough

Well I applaud the women for their stand, even if cost their flight, the system can go to hell along with the profiteers of the so call scanners that are nothing more than pornographic machines.

I refuse to be violated by the government and the system due to my own personal believes that have nothing to do with religion at all.

We need to fight this new invasion of privacy and nothing else than pornography in disguise.

Quite. Women as as likely to be dirty perverts as men are, so claiming women would be any better at these jobs is rather silly.

As for these scanners, don't bother me one bit as I dont mind showing anyone my hunky body, although I agree with a posters sentiments about the actual "threat" terrorist pose.

I could, with £1000 a an afternoon prepare a terrorist attack that would have no warning whatsoever and kill hundreds.

In my job, I could cut the entire nation off the National Grid, or take the BBC off the air. I could turn off the Police National Network and disable the Police Airwave communications system. I could cut off Downing street or Parliament from the outside world. I could even shut down the entire comms network in the UK if I was that way inclined.

All in a building with one old man on security and a bunch of geeks in a large room. If terrorists were such a threat, they would have kicked in our door long ago and done the deed and no-one could have stopped them.

There is no right to fly on a airplane.

Don't like it?

Take a bus.

What would you rather have? A scan from one of these machines, or a caviety search?

You pick.

Guess which one is going to leave you feeling a whole lot more violated? You'll be sitting there feeling like Jodie Foster in "The Accused" after a full-on caviety search.

well, this is a clear thought.
use a plane,,, you get (known) safety measurements,
you singed for it, yes you, in your nice dress.

so do not think you will be treated like moha.d, and its teachings.
you travel in a western world, and pay, receive for it.
after singing an contract,,, like in the koran,,,
your living by its rules, and commitments!

the koran tells you to not use the scanner, and use an alternative travel method, when you can.
it certainly does not allow any person to turn to aggression for no reason as yourself in the beginning.
that made it happen.

do not get upset by the rules that your religion sets upon you.
your incentive is to live by it.
in a peaceful way, like it is meant to be.

Good for them.

I think the reason that you don't see more protest is that people see them as just enhanced metal detectors that we have all grown accustomed to since the 70's.

I understand the scanners are coming to my local airport sometime this year.

I'm not so much worried about the dimwits stealing and abusing my personal image, I have no doubt there will be abuse at some airports.

I'm more concerned with how these machines will effect my health.

Does anyone in the U.S. know if this is how they will handle those who refuse scans or will we have a pat down or prison inmate type of strip search option?

This scanning system should be removed.
This is beyond absurd.

Part of of the problem. The plane is of the earth, does someone really need to own it and profit off of it... And tell people they do not have a right to ride on it! Maybe it should belong to the world for the people of the world to ride on as they see fit :p These scanners make me sick, you should have the option togo throught other security measures.
I won't be flying anywhere.

Huh?

How would it be made? Fuelled? Flown? Maintained?

Communism is nice on paper, but it just doesn't work in real life. People have to pay for planes because operating planes cost money. You have no more a right to use another persons plane without submitting to their conditions, than someone does if they want to use your home or car.

Or would you agree that, as your house is "of this earth", anybody can use it freely as they see fit?

People should be stopped if they refuse to be scanned for weapons.

Sorry that's the world we live in. 100 peoples lives > your misplaced sense of embarassment at a scanner which sees you 'naked'.

How does one define what is a right and what isn't?

Is walking on the street a right?
