Obama's plan for America's space program, according to early reports, represents a fundamental shift for human spaceflight, some experts say.

The reports suggest the Obama administration intends to move toward relying on commercially-built spacecraft, rather than NASA's own vehicles, to carry humans to low-Earth orbit.

The plan would also involve extending the International Space Station's lifetime and abandoning current plans to send astronauts on moon missions by 2020.

One of the major questions about the new plan is what will happen to the goal of returning people to the moon.

What ever happened to those planned moon bases? This sucks.

Frankly...I would prefer a commercially run moonbase verses a government based one for like a billion different reasons.

It does sorta suck that at the moment, theres no mega value in going to the moon/mars/beyond for the big corporations beyond boasting rights...so, I guess this will stop any major space triumphs (from the US anyhow) for a few dozen years.

Dems kill nasa, Reps kill nasa...oh well.

All the space missions you talk about do not require a rocket engine so large to be capable of getting past escape velocity. The speed to break loose of the earths gravity.

The amount of money pissed away by NASA and its contractors with NO measurable achievement in developing this rocket is mind staggering.

There are NO contractors or competent companies that can presently even build or even have the know how to build the heat shield for the capsule to return man from space again.

They all changed their way of thinking when we decided to go with reusable low orbit and they did not keep any of the schematics or scientific data.

Companies merged or went out of business.People got old retired and died.

It is a fact that we wasted a lot of money wanting to escape this planet(and still are)instead of utilizing taxpayer monies to maintain and run this country.

It should be a private endeavor.Let some one else piss their money a way.

Let them develop a new and proven technology.

Remember helium 3? I would think that would be reason enough to go back.

Researchers and space enthusiasts seehelium 3 as the perfect fuel source: extremely potent, nonpolluting, withvirtually no radioactive by-product. Proponents claim its the fuel ofthe 21st century. The trouble is, hardly any of it is found on Earth. But there is plenty of it on the moon.
